Top Places to Visit in Guangzhou
Canton Tower
At 604 meters, Canton Tower is one of the tallest structures in Asia and Guangzhou's defining landmark, its lattice-steel 'waist' silhouette visible across much of the city. Multiple observation decks climb toward the top, including a glass skywalk and a Ferris wheel mounted near the summit, and a rotating restaurant partway up serves meals with a slowly turning view over the Pearl River. It anchors the nightly Flower City Square light and water show below, drawing large crowds for the evening display when the tower itself is also lit. It sits directly on the Pearl River, making it a natural pairing with a river night cruise for views of the skyline from the water.
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport sits on Metro Line 3 (Airport North/South branch); ride it directly, without transferring, to Canton Tower station.
From Guangzhou South Railway Station, take Metro Line 2 to Jiahewanggang, transfer to Line 3, and ride to Canton Tower station.
From Tianhe Coach Terminal, board Metro Line 3 directly toward the main line and ride to Canton Tower station.
Chen Clan Ancestral Hall
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall was built in the 1890s as a shared academy and ancestral temple funded by Chen families across Guangdong province, and it's considered one of the finest surviving examples of Lingnan (southern Chinese) folk architecture. Its courtyards and halls are covered in elaborate wood carvings, brick carvings, stone carvings, ceramic figurines and ironwork, produced by craftsmen from across the region and depicting scenes from opera, mythology and daily life. It now houses the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, with the building's decoration as much the exhibit as the collections displayed inside it. The complex is compact enough to see thoroughly in an hour or two, and its own metro station shares its name, making it an easy stop.
From Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, take Metro Line 3 to Tiyu Xilu (West Tiyu Road), transfer to Line 1, and ride to Chen Clan Academy station.

Shamian Island
Shamian Island is a small sandbank in the Pearl River that served as a foreign trading concession for Britain and France in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and its tree-lined streets are still lined with colonial-era banks, consulates, churches and villas. It's now a quiet, largely pedestrianized pocket of the city, popular for wedding photography against its European facades and for an unhurried walk away from Guangzhou's busier commercial streets. Small parks and riverside promenades run along its edges, and cafes occupy several of the restored historic buildings. It's a short walk from the old Thirteen Hongs trading district and the Qingping traditional medicine market on the mainland side.
From Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, take Metro Line 3 to Tiyu Xilu, transfer to Line 6, and ride to Huangsha station, at the island's eastern tip.
From Guangzhou South Railway Station, take Metro Line 2 to Gongyuanqian, transfer to Line 6, and ride to Huangsha station.

Yuexiu Park
Yuexiu Park is Guangzhou's largest park and home to the Five Rams Sculpture, the granite statue that has become the unofficial symbol of the city, referencing a legend of five immortals who arrived on rams bearing rice to save the city from famine. The park's hilly grounds also hold a preserved stretch of the Ming-dynasty city wall, several lakes, and the red-brick Zhenhai Tower, which houses the Guangzhou Museum and offers a view over the park and skyline from its upper floors. Locals use the park heavily for morning exercise, and its wooded paths make it a shaded break from Guangzhou's summer heat.
From Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, take Metro Line 3 to Jiahewanggang, transfer to Line 2, and ride to Yuexiu Park station.
Guangzhou South Railway Station sits on Metro Line 2; ride it directly, without transferring, to Yuexiu Park station.

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall
The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was built in the early 1930s to honour the revolutionary leader often called the father of modern China, on the former site of the Qing-dynasty governor's residence. Its octagonal main hall, topped with a blue-tiled roof in traditional Chinese style but supported by a then-innovative steel frame, could seat several thousand people without a single interior pillar blocking the view, unusual for its time. The surrounding gardens include a bronze statue of Sun Yat-sen and mature banyan trees, and the hall still hosts performances and public events today. It sits a short walk from Yuexiu Park, making the two easy to combine.
From Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, take Metro Line 3 to Jiahewanggang, transfer to Line 2, and ride to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall station.
