Top Places to Visit in Chongqing

Hongyadong

Hongyadong is an 11-story stilt-house complex built into the cliffside along the Jialing River, its tiered traditional architecture stacked up the hillside in a style historically used to maximize space on Chongqing's steep, mountainous terrain. Originally a much older riverside settlement, the current complex was rebuilt in 2006 as a mixed shopping, dining and entertainment center while preserving the visual character of the traditional stilt houses, and it has become one of the most photographed structures in China, frequently compared to scenes from the animated film Spirited Away. It's most striking after dark, when the entire structure lights up and reflects off the river below, best viewed either from across the river or from a river cruise. Each floor holds different shops, restaurants and snack stalls, and the building connects to street level on one side and a multi-story drop to the riverfront on the other, itself a notable feature of Chongqing's famously vertical urban geography.

Ciqikou Ancient Town

Ciqikou Ancient Town, dating back to the Song dynasty and originally known as Longyin Town, sits on the banks of the Jialing River and takes its current name, meaning Porcelain Port, from its history as a ceramics trading hub. Narrow stone-paved streets climb the hillside past preserved wooden buildings now housing teahouses, snack shops and craft vendors, giving a strong sense of what pre-modern Chongqing looked like, in contrast to the city's otherwise thoroughly futuristic skyline. Traditional Sichuan opera and other folk performances run periodically in some of the teahouses, and local snacks specific to the area, including a well-known variety of sweet dough twist, draw as many visitors as the historic architecture itself. It gets crowded on weekends and holidays, and the steep, narrow lanes can feel genuinely packed at peak times, so an early or weekday visit gives a noticeably calmer experience.

Liziba Station

Liziba Station is a functioning stop on Chongqing's Metro Line 2 monorail, made globally famous for the fact that the elevated track passes directly through the 6th to 8th floors of a residential apartment building, with the train visibly emerging from and disappearing back into the structure. The building was specifically engineered around the rail line during construction, with the lower floors designed for commercial use and noise insulation built into the residential floors above and around the track, rather than the more commonly told version that the building was simply built around a pre-existing line. A dedicated viewing platform across from the building lets visitors watch trains pass through without needing to ride the line themselves, and it has become one of the most photographed single spots in Chongqing precisely because the phenomenon is genuinely unique rather than a recreated attraction. Trains pass at regular intervals throughout the day, so timing a visit around the platform's posted schedule helps avoid a wasted wait.

Eling Park

Eling Park sits atop one of the highest points in central Chongqing's Yuzhong peninsula, offering panoramic views over the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers and the dense high-rise skyline that has made Chongqing one of China's most visually striking cities. Originally developed in the early 20th century, the park combines landscaped gardens, pavilions and walking paths with several observation points specifically positioned to capture the city's dramatic topography, where buildings climb steeply up hillsides in ways uncommon elsewhere in China. It's a particularly popular spot at dusk, when the city's extensive nighttime illumination begins to switch on across the skyline and along both rivers. Compared to the denser commercial attractions like Hongyadong or Jiefangbei, Eling Park offers a quieter, more elevated perspective on the same cityscape, well suited to visitors who've already spent time down among the crowds.

From Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport, take Metro Line 3 to a connecting interchange, transfer toward the city center, and continue by taxi or connecting bus to Eling Park.

Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street

Jiefangbei, centered on the People's Liberation Monument, is Chongqing's principal downtown commercial district, a dense pedestrian shopping area lined with department stores, international brands and local shops that has served as the city's retail and social hub for decades. The monument itself, originally built in the 1940s to commemorate the resistance against Japanese occupation during World War II and later rededicated to mark national liberation, remains the district's namesake and central landmark despite being dwarfed by the surrounding modern towers. The area connects easily on foot to both Hongyadong and the Chaotianmen riverfront, making it a natural hub for stringing together several central Chongqing sights in a single walk. Its street-level food stalls and surrounding lanes, including nearby Bayi Road Snack Street, offer a dense concentration of Chongqing's spicy regional cuisine within a short walk of the monument itself.
