Top Places to Visit in Chengdu

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the city's best-known attraction and one of the world's leading panda conservation and research facilities, home to giant pandas as well as the smaller, less famous red panda. Wooded enclosures designed to mimic natural habitat let pandas roam, climb and, most popularly with visitors, eat enormous quantities of bamboo at a relaxed pace. Pandas are most active in the cooler morning hours, so an early arrival, ideally at opening time, gives the best chance of seeing them awake and moving rather than napping in the shade, which is how they spend much of the afternoon. The base also runs breeding and research programs not visible to the public, alongside the viewing areas open to visitors.

Wuhou Shrine

Wuhou Shrine honors Zhuge Liang, the legendary military strategist and chancellor of the Shu Kingdom during China's Three Kingdoms period, along with Liu Bei, Shu's founding emperor, whose tomb sits within the same grounds. The temple complex, first built in the 3rd century and reconstructed multiple times since, is one of the most significant Three Kingdoms-era historical sites in China, filled with statues, steles and calligraphy tied to the era's key figures. For visitors less familiar with Three Kingdoms history, the temple's halls and gardens are still worth a walk for their architecture and quiet atmosphere, distinct from Chengdu's busier commercial streets. It sits directly beside Jinli Ancient Street, so most visitors combine the two into a single outing.

Jinli Ancient Street

Jinli Ancient Street, built in a late-Qing-dynasty style right beside Wuhou Shrine, is one of Chengdu's oldest and most atmospheric commercial streets, lined with wooden shopfronts, red lanterns, teahouses and stalls selling local snacks and handicrafts. It's often described as the busiest and most photogenic street in the city, especially after dark when lanterns light up the narrow lanes and street performers add to the atmosphere. Popular snacks to try along the way include sweet potato balls, fried sticky rice and local candied fruit skewers, and the street's teahouses offer a chance to sit and rest between stalls. It functions as a shopping street more than a historical site in the strict sense, but its architecture and setting make it worth the walk regardless.

Kuanzhai Alley (Wide and Narrow Alleys)

Kuanzhai Alley is a trio of parallel historic lanes, Wide Alley, Narrow Alley and Well Alley, lined with Qing-dynasty-style courtyard buildings that now house teahouses, restaurants, boutique shops and bars. Originally built as a Manchu garrison quarter in the early 1700s, the area was extensively restored in the 2000s and is now one of Chengdu's most popular spots for an evening out, especially for people-watching from a traditional teahouse with a cup of tea and an ear-cleaning treatment, a small local specialty. It gets crowded, particularly on weekends, but the crowds are part of the atmosphere as much as the architecture. It sits close to the city center, making it an easy add-on to a day that includes People's Park or Tianfu Square.

Du Fu Thatched Cottage

Du Fu Thatched Cottage marks the site where Du Fu, one of the most celebrated poets in Chinese history, lived for about four years in the 8th century after fleeing the An Lushan Rebellion. The current complex is a later reconstruction rather than the poet's original hut, set within landscaped gardens of bamboo groves, ponds and traditional pavilions that evoke the rural retreat Du Fu wrote about in his poetry from this period. Exhibition halls display his poems alongside historical context on Tang-dynasty literary culture, and the gardens themselves are peaceful enough to justify a visit even without deep familiarity with his work. It's a quieter, more contemplative stop compared to Chengdu's livelier commercial streets, and pairs well with a visit to the nearby Jinsha Site Museum.
