Top Places to Visit in Tianjin

Tianjin Eye

The Tianjin Eye is a 120-meter Ferris wheel built directly over the Yongle Bridge spanning the Haihe River, making it the only observation wheel in the world constructed on top of a working bridge. Cars below continue to cross the bridge while riders circle overhead, a design choice that was as much a practical land-use solution as a novelty. A full rotation takes around 30 minutes, long enough to take in Tianjin's skyline along both banks of the river, and the wheel is especially striking after dark when it's lit with changing colors visible from much of the surrounding riverfront. It's a short walk from Ancient Culture Street, making the two an easy pairing for a single outing.

From Tianjin Binhai International Airport, take Metro Line 2 directly toward downtown and get off near Tianjin Railway Station, then continue a short distance on foot or by taxi to the river.

Ancient Culture Street

Ancient Culture Street is a reconstructed Qing-dynasty-style shopping street built around the Tianhou Palace, a temple dedicated to Mazu, the sea goddess long worshipped by Tianjin's fishing and trading communities. Shops along the street specialize in traditional crafts, including Yangliuqing woodblock New Year paintings and the painted clay figurines known as Clay Figure Zhang, both distinctive local art forms with roots in the city's history as a trading port. The street is busiest and most festive around Chinese New Year and during the temple fair held on the 23rd day of the third lunar month, when crowds pack the narrow lanes for performances and street food. Even outside festival periods, it remains one of the more atmospheric places in Tianjin to shop for souvenirs and see traditional architecture.

Italian Style Town

Italian Style Town preserves the only former Italian concession outside Italy itself, granted to Italy in 1901 and developed with more than 200 Mediterranean-style buildings that still stand along its streets today. Restored and reopened as a leisure district in the 2000s, it now mixes its European-era architecture with Western restaurants, cafes, bars and boutique shops, drawing a mostly local after-work crowd as well as tourists. Fountains and string lights make the area particularly attractive in the evening, when many visitors come specifically to walk the streets and eat at one of its Italian or other Western restaurants rather than for any single sight. It sits close to the Haihe River and the Tianjin Eye, making it easy to combine into a single riverside evening.

Five Great Avenues

Five Great Avenues is a former foreign concession district holding more than 200 European-style villas and mansions built between the 1920s and 1940s, when Tianjin's concessions drew wealthy merchants, foreign diplomats and, notably, several exiled Chinese political and military figures who built homes here away from Beijing's instability. The area blends British, French, Italian and other European architectural styles block by block, and horse-drawn carriage rides and double-decker sightseeing buses are popular ways to tour its tree-lined streets without covering the whole district on foot. Many of the villas remain private residences, so most of the experience is architectural viewing from the street rather than interior visits, though a handful of buildings are open as small museums or cafes.

From Tianjin Binhai International Airport, take Metro Line 2 toward downtown, transferring as needed toward Xiaobailou station, at the edge of the district.

Porcelain House

Porcelain House is a French-colonial-era villa entirely reclad, inside and out, in a private collector's assembly of antique porcelain, from Qing-dynasty vases and plates to shards arranged into dragon and phoenix mosaics covering the walls, columns and even the garden's exterior surfaces. The project, undertaken over roughly a decade starting in the 2000s by businessman Zhang Lianzhi, is estimated to incorporate millions of individual porcelain fragments alongside intact antique pieces, making it one of the more unusual private art projects turned public museum anywhere in China. The building's original French architecture is still visible underneath the porcelain work, creating an unusual layering of European structure and Chinese decorative material. It's a compact site that can be seen thoroughly in under an hour, making it easy to fit alongside other nearby attractions.

From the airport

From Tianjin Binhai International Airport, take Metro Line 2 toward downtown and continue by taxi to the house, which sits along the Haihe River near the Italian Style Town area.
