Top Places to Visit in Harbin
Saint Sophia Cathedral
Saint Sophia Cathedral was first built in wood in 1907, shortly after completion of the Trans-Siberian Railway's Chinese branch connected Vladivostok to Harbin and brought a wave of Russian settlers to the city. Rebuilt in brick and stone starting in 1923 and completed in 1932, the Byzantine Revival cathedral, with its large green dome and red-brick facade, is now the largest Orthodox church remaining in the Far East and one of the most significant surviving symbols of Harbin's Russian colonial-era history. No longer an active church, the interior now houses the Harbin Architecture Art Gallery, displaying historical photographs documenting the city's Russian and Chinese architectural development over the past century. The surrounding square is especially popular in the evening, when the cathedral is lit up gold against the night sky, and pigeons gather in large numbers throughout the day, a favorite subject for photographers.
From Harbin Taiping International Airport, take Airport Bus Line 3 to the Central Avenue stop, then walk about 900 meters to the cathedral.
From Harbin Railway Station, take Metro Line 2 one stop to Shangzhi Avenue station, exit 1, and walk about 11 minutes to the cathedral.
From Harbin's long-distance bus stations, take the metro toward Shangzhi Avenue station, then walk to the cathedral.
Central Street (Zhongyang Dajie)
Central Street, or Zhongyang Dajie, is a pedestrianized boulevard lined with over 70 buildings in European architectural styles, including Baroque, Renaissance and Byzantine influences, a legacy of the Russian and other European merchants who developed the street in the early 20th century. Paved with distinctive granite cobblestones imported from Russia over a century ago, the street runs roughly 1.4 kilometers from the city center down toward the Songhua River, lined today with shops, cafes, and stalls selling Harbin's famous ice cream, popular even in the depths of winter. It becomes especially festive during the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival, when ice sculptures and lantern displays line the route alongside its usual mix of Western-style boutiques and Russian bakeries. The street connects directly to Saint Sophia Cathedral's square, making the two an easy, natural walking pairing.
From Harbin Taiping International Airport, take Airport Bus Line 3 directly to the Central Avenue stop, at the street's entrance.
From Harbin Railway Station, take Metro Line 1 toward the city center, or walk, as Central Street sits within reasonable walking distance of the station.
From Harbin's long-distance bus stations, take the metro toward the city center and walk to Central Street.
Harbin Ice and Snow World
Harbin Ice and Snow World, held annually from around late December through February on the north bank of the Songhua River, is the centerpiece of the city's famous Ice and Snow Festival and among the largest ice and snow theme parks in the world. Massive castles, towers and sculptures, some multiple stories tall, are carved and built entirely from ice blocks harvested from the frozen Songhua River, then embedded with colored LED lighting that transforms the park into a glowing, otherworldly landscape after dark. Ice slides, skating areas and an ice maze add interactive elements alongside the purely visual sculptures, and the park is typically at its most impressive and crowded in the evening, when the lighting effects are fully visible. Because it's an outdoor winter event in a region where temperatures regularly drop well below freezing, warm layered clothing is essential, and most visitors limit their time in any single section to avoid extended cold exposure.
From Harbin Taiping International Airport, take a taxi or ride-hailing app directly to Ice and Snow World on the north bank of the Songhua River, as it requires crossing the river from most other city sights.
From Harbin Railway Station, take a taxi or ride-hailing app across the river to Ice and Snow World, roughly 10-15 minutes depending on traffic and season.
From Harbin's long-distance bus stations, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to Ice and Snow World.
Sun Island Scenic Area
Sun Island, sitting on the north bank of the Songhua River directly across from Harbin's historic city center, has developed since the 1990s into one of the city's major recreational and cultural districts, home to expansive parkland, the Harbin Snow Sculpture Art Expo, and the Siberian Tiger Park. In spring and summer, the island's gardens and open lawns draw picnicking families and cyclists, a markedly different atmosphere from its role as a winter ice-and-snow destination during the festival season. The Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo, running alongside the broader Ice and Snow Festival each winter, showcases elaborate carved snow artworks on a scale distinct from the illuminated ice structures at Ice and Snow World nearby. Crossing the Songhua River by bridge or, in deep winter, occasionally on foot across the frozen ice itself, is considered part of the Sun Island experience by many visitors and locals alike.

Siberian Tiger Park
The Siberian Tiger Park, on Sun Island, is home to one of the largest populations of captive Siberian tigers in the world, part of a breeding and conservation program for a subspecies that remains critically endangered in the wild across its native range in the Russian Far East and northeastern China. Visitors typically tour the park by an enclosed bus that drives through large open enclosures where tigers roam in something closer to a natural setting than a conventional zoo, occasionally approaching the vehicles at close range. Feeding demonstrations, where live or fresh prey is released into the enclosures, draw both strong interest and some ethical debate among visitors, and the park's approach reflects a broader tension in Chinese wildlife tourism between conservation messaging and more spectacle-driven attractions. Beyond Siberian tigers, the park also houses other big cat species, including lions and other tiger subspecies, within its grounds.
From Harbin Taiping International Airport, take a taxi or ride-hailing app directly to the Siberian Tiger Park on Sun Island.
From Harbin Railway Station, take a taxi or ride-hailing app across the river to the Siberian Tiger Park, roughly 15-20 minutes.
