Top Places to Visit in Foshan
Ancestral Temple (Zumiao)
The Ancestral Temple, or Zumiao, was built in the 1080s during the Northern Song dynasty as a Taoist temple dedicated to the Northern Deity Xuantian, and remains one of the finest surviving examples of Lingnan architecture, its halls covered in elaborate wood, brick and stone carvings along with ceramic roof figures characteristic of the region's Shiwan pottery tradition. Because Foshan is considered a birthplace of southern Chinese martial arts, the temple complex also houses memorial halls honoring martial artists Wong Fei-hung and Ip Man, the latter famous internationally as Bruce Lee's teacher, and weekend lion dance and martial arts performances are held in the temple's main courtyard. The bronze main deity statue inside, cast in the Ming dynasty, is one of the largest of its kind in China. It's a compact but dense site, easily paired with the neighboring Lingnan Tiandi district on the same visit.
From Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (the nearest major airport), take Metro Line 3 to a connecting interchange, transfer toward the Guangfo Line, and ride to Zumiao station, right at the temple.
From Foshan Railway Station, take the Guangfo Line (part of the Foshan/Guangzhou metro network) directly to Zumiao station.
From Foshan's long-distance bus stations, take the Guangfo Line to Zumiao station.
Lingnan Tiandi
Lingnan Tiandi occupies what was once Foshan's principal commercial street during the Qing dynasty, a district of more than 20 protected historic sites and over a hundred restored buildings showing off classic Lingnan architectural features, including arcaded shopfronts, green-brick facades and stone-paved lanes. Many of the historic buildings now house galleries, cafes, bars and boutique shops, giving the district a redeveloped, lifestyle-oriented character comparable to Xintiandi in Shanghai, while still retaining a genuine sense of the area's original street layout and architecture. It sits immediately outside the Ancestral Temple's east gate, making the two a natural single visit, and the district is particularly pleasant for an unhurried evening stroll and dinner. Its distinctive gray-brick and green-tiled buildings photograph especially well in the late afternoon light.
From Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, take Metro Line 3 to a connecting interchange, transfer toward the Guangfo Line, and ride to Zumiao station, a short walk from Lingnan Tiandi.
From Foshan Railway Station, take the Guangfo Line directly to Zumiao station, a short walk from Lingnan Tiandi.
From Foshan's long-distance bus stations, take the Guangfo Line to Zumiao station.
Nanfeng Ancient Kiln
Nanfeng Ancient Kiln, in Foshan's Shiwan area, has produced ceramics continuously since the Ming dynasty, a run of more than 500 years recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest-operating dragon kiln still in use anywhere. The dragon kiln itself, a long, sloped wood-fired structure built into a hillside, sits alongside the Shiwan Ceramics Museum, workshops where visitors can try hand-throwing pottery, and Shiwan Doll Street, lined with shops selling the region's distinctive glazed ceramic figurines. Foshan's ceramics tradition, particularly its Shiwan-ware roof ornaments and figurines, decorated temples and buildings across southern China for centuries, and this site is where much of that craft is still practiced today rather than simply displayed. The complex is compact enough to see in two to three hours, including time for a hands-on pottery session.
From Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, take Metro Line 3 to a connecting interchange, transfer toward the Guangfo Line, and ride toward Shiwan, then a local bus or taxi to the kiln.
From Foshan Railway Station, take the Guangfo Line toward Shiwan, then a local bus or taxi to the kiln.
From Foshan's long-distance bus stations, take a local bus (several routes serve Shiwan) or taxi toward Nanfeng Ancient Kiln.
Xiqiao Mountain
Xiqiao Mountain, a dormant volcano dating back roughly 40 million years, rises from the flat Pearl River Delta landscape southwest of central Foshan and has long been a retreat for scholars, artists and Buddhist and Taoist practitioners, dotted with temples, waterfalls and more than 200 identified peaks within the wider park. Its most prominent modern landmark is a roughly 62-meter bronze statue of Guanyin, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, visible from a considerable distance across the surrounding countryside and reachable by a walking path or shuttle from the park's lower areas. The mountain's caves, cliffs and waterfalls have been shaped over centuries by both natural erosion and historical quarrying, leaving behind unusual rock formations alongside the natural scenery. It offers a genuinely different pace and landscape from Foshan's dense old-town core, worth the added travel time for visitors with a full day to spare.
Xiqiao Mountain sits a considerable distance from central Foshan and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, with no direct metro connection; a taxi or ride-hailing app, or a long-distance bus toward Nanhai/Xiqiao, is the standard way to reach it.
From Foshan Railway Station, take a taxi, ride-hailing app, or connecting long-distance bus toward Xiqiao Mountain, as it isn't served by the Guangfo Line.
From Foshan's long-distance bus stations, look for a bus bound for Xiqiao or Nanhai District, or take a taxi/ride-hailing app for the full trip.
Qinghui Garden
Qinghui Garden, in Foshan's Shunde district, is considered one of the four great classical gardens of Guangdong province alongside Foshan's own Liang Garden, built up gradually by a Qing-dynasty scholar-official family from the late 1700s through the 1800s. Its design blends elements of Suzhou-style garden aesthetics with distinctly Lingnan features suited to the subtropical southern climate, arranging pavilions, ponds, rockeries and covered corridors to create a sequence of framed views as visitors move through the grounds. Unlike some of China's more monumental gardens, Qinghui was built as a genuine private residence and retains an intimate, human scale, with carved wooden screens, stone reliefs and calligraphy throughout its halls reflecting the refined taste of its original owners. It sits in Shunde, a district also well known for its Cantonese cuisine, making it easy to pair a garden visit with some of the area's well-regarded local restaurants.
Qinghui Garden sits in Shunde district, a considerable distance from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport with no direct metro connection; a taxi or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach it.
From Foshan Railway Station, take a taxi or ride-hailing app toward Shunde and Qinghui Garden, as it isn't directly served by the Guangfo Line.
