Most of the World Does Not Change Its Clocks

Of the 277 time zones covered by this site, only 70 change their clocks. The other 207 stay fixed all year. Daylight saving is largely a European, North American and Australasian habit; most of Asia, Africa and South America has either never adopted it or dropped it.

That asymmetry is what actually causes trouble. If both ends of a call change their clocks on the same date, the difference between them never moves. The problems come from the mismatches: the UK switches a week before the US, so for that week London and New York are four hours apart instead of five. Australia moves in the opposite season entirely. And India, China and most of the Gulf never move at all, so every gap involving them shifts twice a year purely because the other side moved.

Every city page on this site states whether that city observes daylight saving and the exact date its clocks next change, and every converter page works out what the gap becomes afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do the clocks change next?

The next change anywhere is Saturday, October 24, 2026, when 3 time zones move their clocks back. That is 13 days from today.

Does every country change its clocks?

No — and most do not. Of the 277 time zones covered by this site, 70 change their clocks and 207 stay fixed all year. Daylight saving is largely a European, North American and Australasian practice; most of Asia, Africa and South America does without it.

Why do different countries change on different dates?

Because each sets its own rules. The EU switches on the last Sunday in March and October, the US on the second Sunday in March and first in November, and the southern hemisphere runs on the opposite half of the year entirely. For a week or two around each change, familiar time differences are an hour out.

Do the clocks go forward or back?

Forward in spring, back in the fall — "spring forward, fall back". Going forward costs an hour of sleep and gives lighter evenings; going back returns the hour and brings darker afternoons. In the southern hemisphere the seasons, and therefore the dates, are reversed.

Is daylight saving being abolished?

It has been proposed repeatedly and enacted rarely. The European Parliament voted in 2019 to end seasonal clock changes but member states never agreed on which time to settle on, so nothing happened. In the US the Sunshine Protection Act has passed the Senate but not the House. Meanwhile Mexico, Brazil, Russia, Turkey and Iran have all abolished it outright in the last fifteen years.
