Does India Use Daylight Saving Time?
No — India does not change its clocks. The offset from UTC is the same every day of the year.
What Happens, and When
India does not observe daylight saving time. Indian Standard Time stays at UTC+5:30 every day of the year, so the gap between India and any other country changes only when that other country moves its clocks.
Your Time Differences Still Move — Just Not Because of You
Clocks in India never move, but plenty of time differences involving India do. Every one of these shifts by an hour when the country at the other end changes, and the date is theirs, not yours. This is why a standing call that has worked all year suddenly lands an hour out.
| Difference to | Changes on | Gap |
|---|---|---|
| London | Oct 25, 2026 | -4:30 → -5:30 |
| Paris | Oct 25, 2026 | -3:30 → -4:30 |
| New York | Nov 1, 2026 | -9:30 → -10:30 |
| Los Angeles | Nov 1, 2026 | -12:30 → -13:30 |
| Auckland | Apr 4, 2027 | +7:30 → +6:30 |
| Sydney | Apr 4, 2027 | +5:30 → +4:30 |
Shaded rows are within the next two months. Gaps are shown from India's point of view: a positive number means the other city is ahead.
Why India Does Not Change Its Clocks
India used daylight saving briefly during the wars of 1962, 1965 and 1971. The bigger live debate is not about daylight saving but about whether India should have two time zones at all: the country is wide enough for two, and the north-east sees sunrise nearly two hours before Mumbai. Proposals resurface regularly and have never been adopted.
The practical consequence is that time differences involving India still move twice a year, but because the other country changed, not this one. That catches people out precisely because nothing appears to have happened locally.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does India observe daylight saving time?
No. Clocks in India do not change, so the local offset from UTC is the same every day of the year.
Why does the time difference to my country still change twice a year, then?
Because the other country moves. If you are scheduling between India and somewhere that observes daylight saving, the gap between you shifts by an hour when their clocks change, not when yours do.
Will my meetings be affected?
Any recurring meeting booked across a clock change needs checking, because the two ends move at different times — or one end does not move at all. The time zone converter shows the exact gap for any pair on any date.
