Top Places to Visit in Hyderabad

Charminar

Charminar, built in 1591 by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, marks the heart of Hyderabad's Old City and is among India's most recognizable monuments, its four grand arches and minarets rising 56 meters above the surrounding streets. Local tradition holds it was built to commemorate the end of a plague epidemic, though its exact original purpose remains debated among historians. Each of its four arches opens onto a different street, one leading directly into Laad Bazaar, a centuries-old market famous for its bangles, pearls and traditional Hyderabadi jewelry, especially lively and atmospheric after sunset. The Mecca Masjid, one of India's oldest and largest mosques, sits just southwest of the monument, and the two together anchor a dense, historic quarter that rewards slow wandering as much as focused sightseeing.

From the airport

From Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, take the Airport Metro Express to Miyapur, transfer to the Red Line, ride to Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station, transfer to the Blue Line, and continue toward the Old City, then a short taxi or auto-rickshaw to Charminar, as the metro doesn't yet reach directly into the old city core.

From the railway station

From Hyderabad Deccan (Nampally) railway station, take a taxi or auto-rickshaw into the Old City to Charminar, roughly 20-30 minutes depending on traffic.

Golconda Fort

Golconda Fort, built by the Qutb Shahi dynasty atop an earlier Kakatiya-era mud fort, was once the center of a kingdom famous for diamond trading, including stones later cut into the Koh-i-Noor and Hope Diamond, mined from riverbeds in the surrounding region. Its outer walls, running nearly 11 kilometers with eight gateways, enclose palaces, mosques, armories and a renowned acoustic system in which a hand-clap at the entrance gate can reportedly be heard clearly at the highest pavilion, nearly a kilometer away, historically used as a warning system. A nightly sound and light show narrates the fort's history and the legends of its rulers, drawing crowds distinct from the daytime visitors focused on the architecture and views alone. The climb to the fort's highest point offers sweeping views over Hyderabad, particularly striking around sunset.

From the airport

From Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, take the Airport Metro Express to Miyapur, transfer to the Red Line, and continue toward Peddamma Temple or Lakdikapul station, then a taxi or auto-rickshaw for the final stretch to the fort, as the metro doesn't reach directly to Golconda.

Hussain Sagar Lake

Hussain Sagar Lake, built in 1563 by Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah's official Hussain Shah Wali, is a large artificial lake that historically separated and today connects the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. At its center stands a 17-meter monolithic granite statue of Buddha, installed in 1992 and reachable by boat, one of the largest monolithic Buddha statues in the country. Tank Bund, the promenade running along the lake's eastern edge, is lined with statues of notable Telugu and Indian historical figures and remains a popular evening walking spot, while Lumbini Park on the western shore offers musical fountain shows and boating. The lake and its surrounding parks are especially lively in the evening, when cooler temperatures and illuminated views draw large numbers of local residents alongside visitors.

From the airport

From Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, take the Airport Metro Express to Miyapur, transfer to the Red Line, and ride toward Khairatabad or Necklace Road station, both near the lake.

From the railway station

Salar Jung Museum

The Salar Jung Museum, housing the personal collection of Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, Salar Jung III, a former prime minister of Hyderabad state, is one of India's largest single-owner art collections and among the country's most significant museums. Its more than 40,000 exhibited objects span an unusually broad range, from Mughal miniature paintings and Persian carpets to European sculpture, Chinese jade and a famous mechanical clock that still chimes on the hour with a small figure striking a gong. The collection's breadth reflects Salar Jung III's personal, eclectic taste as a collector rather than any single curatorial theme, giving the museum an unusually wide-ranging, almost cabinet-of-curiosities character. Given its size, a focused visit to a few specific galleries tends to be more rewarding than attempting the entire collection in one visit.

From the airport

From Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, take the Airport Metro Express to Miyapur, transfer to the Red Line, ride to Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station, transfer to the Blue Line, and continue toward the museum, then a short taxi or auto-rickshaw for the final stretch.

Chowmahalla Palace

Chowmahalla Palace served as the seat of the Nizams of Hyderabad and their official reception venue for royalty and dignitaries, its name meaning Four Palaces after the four courtyards originally comprising the complex. The Khilwat Mubarak, the palace's grand durbar hall, features a ceiling of ornate chandeliers and a marble platform once used for the Nizam's throne, and remains the most photographed space in the complex. Vintage cars from the Nizam's personal collection, along with royal costumes, ceremonial objects and photographs documenting Hyderabad's princely-state era, are displayed throughout the palace's various wings. It sits about 800 meters from Charminar, making it an easy and natural addition to a visit to the Old City's more famous landmark.
