Top Places to Visit in Ahmedabad
Sabarmati Ashram
Sabarmati Ashram, founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1917 on the banks of the Sabarmati River, served as his home and the operational headquarters of India's independence movement for 13 years, and it was from here that he launched the 1930 Dandi Salt March, a defining act of civil disobedience against British colonial rule. Hriday Kunj, Gandhi's modest personal cottage within the ashram grounds, is preserved much as it was during his residence, and the on-site museum, Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya, displays photographs, letters and personal artifacts including his spinning wheel, a recurring symbol of his philosophy of self-reliance. The ashram's quiet, riverside setting, with simple whitewashed buildings and shaded courtyards, contrasts deliberately with any sense of monument-building, reflecting Gandhi's own preference for simplicity. It remains an active site for education and research into Gandhian philosophy and nonviolent resistance, well beyond its role as a historical landmark.
From Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, take the Ahmedabad Metro (transferring as needed) toward the Sabarmati Ashram area, or a taxi, roughly 20-30 minutes depending on traffic.
From Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur) railway station, take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to the ashram, roughly 15-20 minutes, or connect via the metro toward the Sabarmati Ashram area.
From Ahmedabad's long-distance bus stations, take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to the ashram, or connect via the metro.
Adalaj Stepwell
Adalaj Stepwell, built in 1499 under Queen Rudabai, descends five stories into the earth in an octagonal design intended to provide relief from Gujarat's intense heat as much as to store water, historically serving as both a practical water source and a cool gathering space for travelers and pilgrims. Its walls and pillars are densely carved with floral motifs, mythological figures, and depictions of birds and elephants, blending Hindu, Jain and Islamic decorative traditions in a way characteristic of Gujarat's Indo-Islamic architectural style of the period. Sunlight filtering down through the stepped openings changes the quality of light on the carvings throughout the day, making dawn and dusk particularly favored times to visit for photography. Located about 18 kilometers from central Ahmedabad, it's usually visited as a half-day excursion rather than folded into a walking tour of the city center.
From Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to Adalaj, roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic, as the stepwell sits outside the metro network's current reach.
From Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur) railway station, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to Adalaj, roughly 30-40 minutes.
From Ahmedabad's long-distance bus stations, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to Adalaj, or look for a local bus route serving the Gandhinagar highway corridor.
Jama Masjid
Jama Masjid, built in 1424 by Sultan Ahmed Shah I, the founder of Ahmedabad, is among the finest examples of Indo-Islamic architecture in Gujarat, its design blending Islamic structural forms with intricately carved columns and motifs drawn from earlier Hindu and Jain temple traditions demolished or repurposed during the city's founding. The mosque's vast courtyard, surrounded by colonnaded prayer halls topped with domes, can accommodate thousands of worshippers, and its numerous carved stone pillars, no two decorated identically, reflect the work of local craftsmen adapting their existing skills to a new religious architectural form. Ahmed Shah's tomb sits just outside the mosque's eastern gate, adding a layer of historical continuity to the site as the resting place of the city's founder. It remains an active mosque within Ahmedabad's dense old city core, so modest dress and awareness of prayer times are advisable when visiting.
From Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to the Old City, roughly 25-35 minutes depending on traffic, as the mosque sits outside easy metro walking distance.
From Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur) railway station, the mosque is about 2 km away; a short taxi, auto-rickshaw, or walk covers the distance.
From Ahmedabad's long-distance bus stations, take a taxi or auto-rickshaw into the Old City to the mosque.
Kankaria Lake
Kankaria Lake, built in 1451 during the reign of Sultan Qutb-ud-Din Ahmad Shah II, is a large polygonal artificial lake that has become one of Ahmedabad's most popular recreational spaces, ringed by a walking and cycling promenade, gardens, a zoo, and a small amusement park. Nagina Wadi, a small island garden at the lake's center historically used as a royal retreat, is reachable by boat and offers a quieter, more secluded counterpart to the busy promenade circling the main lake. In the evening, the lakefront draws large numbers of local families for walks, street food and the periodic musical fountain and light shows staged along the water. Its combination of recreational, family-friendly attractions with genuine historical origins gives it a different, more everyday character compared to Ahmedabad's more purely heritage-focused sites.
From Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to Kankaria Lake, roughly 25-35 minutes depending on traffic.
From Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur) railway station, take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to Kankaria Lake, roughly 15-20 minutes.
From Ahmedabad's long-distance bus stations, take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to Kankaria Lake.
Sidi Saiyyed Mosque
Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, completed in 1573 near the end of the Gujarat Sultanate's rule over Ahmedabad, is a comparatively small mosque famous almost entirely for a single architectural feature: ten intricately carved stone latticework windows, or jalis, depicting an intertwined tree of life design that has become one of the most recognized symbols of the city, appearing on the emblem of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. Each jali is carved from a single stone slab, and the delicacy of the interlocking branches and foliage represents one of the finest surviving examples of stone lattice work from the period, technically remarkable given the material's brittleness. The mosque itself is modest in scale and can be seen thoroughly in a short visit, making it an easy stop to combine with other nearby Old City sites like Bhadra Fort or Teen Darwaza. Its location directly beside a busy road junction, with traffic circling close to the building, is itself a distinctive feature of visiting it today.
From Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to the Old City, roughly 25-35 minutes depending on traffic.
From Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur) railway station, take a short taxi or auto-rickshaw ride to the mosque, roughly 10-15 minutes.
From Ahmedabad's long-distance bus stations, take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to the mosque.
