Top Places to Visit in Mumbai
Gateway of India
The Gateway of India is a monumental arch built in Indo-Saracenic style on Mumbai's waterfront, completed in 1924 to commemorate the 1911 visit of King George V and Queen Mary, the first-ever visit by a British monarch to India. Facing the Arabian Sea at Apollo Bunder, it later took on a very different symbolic role: British troops departed India through this same arch in 1948 following independence. The plaza in front is a constant swirl of vendors, photographers and pigeons, and boats to Elephanta Island depart from a jetty just beside it. The neighboring Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, one of Mumbai's most storied buildings, makes an easy pairing with a visit here.
Take Metro Line 3 directly from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (T2 station) to Cuffe Parade or Vidhan Bhavan station, a short walk from the Gateway.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) has its own Metro Line 3 station; ride toward Cuffe Parade and get off at Vidhan Bhavan, about a 7-minute walk from the Gateway.
From Mumbai Central, take Metro Line 3 toward Cuffe Parade and get off at Vidhan Bhavan station.
Marine Drive
Marine Drive is a 2-mile arc of promenade tracing Mumbai's western shoreline from Nariman Point to Malabar Hill, its curve of streetlights giving it the nickname the Queen's Necklace when viewed from above after dark. Built in the 1920s on reclaimed land, it remains one of the city's most popular places for an evening walk, with locals gathering along the sea wall to watch the sunset over the Arabian Sea. Chowpatty Beach sits at its northern end, known for street food stalls selling bhel puri and pav bhaji, particularly lively in the evenings and during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival when idols are ceremonially immersed in the sea here. The drive is flat and easy to walk in either direction, with Art Deco buildings lining its inland side.
Take Metro Line 3 directly from the airport to Churchgate station, at Marine Drive's southern end.
From CSMT, take Metro Line 3 toward Churchgate station, a short walk from the promenade.
From Mumbai Central, take Metro Line 3 toward Churchgate station.
Elephanta Caves
Elephanta Caves occupy a small island in Mumbai Harbour, about an hour by ferry from the Gateway of India, and hold a set of rock-cut Hindu temples dating to the 5th to 7th centuries, dedicated primarily to Shiva. The centerpiece is a colossal three-headed sculpture of Sadashiva representing Shiva as creator, preserver and destroyer, carved directly into the cave's rock alongside other large-scale reliefs depicting scenes from Shaivite mythology. The island itself, officially called Gharapuri, is small and largely undeveloped beyond the caves, reached by a walk or a short toy-train ride from the jetty. Ferries run regularly through the day but stop by early evening, and the site is closed on Mondays, so timing a visit around both is worth checking in advance.
Take Metro Line 3 from the airport to Vidhan Bhavan station, walk to the Gateway of India jetty, and take the roughly hour-long ferry to Elephanta Island.
From CSMT, take Metro Line 3 to Vidhan Bhavan station or a short taxi to the Gateway of India jetty, then the ferry to Elephanta Island.
From Mumbai Central, take Metro Line 3 toward Vidhan Bhavan station, then walk to the Gateway of India jetty for the ferry.
Haji Ali Dargah
Haji Ali Dargah is a mosque and mausoleum built on a small islet off Worli, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway that floods at high tide, meaning access sometimes depends on checking the tide schedule beforehand. It dates to the 1400s and holds the tomb of Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, a wealthy merchant-turned-Sufi saint who, according to local tradition, gave away his possessions before a pilgrimage to Mecca. The white marble structure sits starkly against the surrounding sea, drawing visitors of multiple faiths who come to pray or simply take in the setting. The causeway itself is often lined with beggars and small vendors, a stretch that's very much part of the pilgrimage experience rather than separate from it.
Take Metro Line 3 directly from the airport to Haji Ali station, a short walk from the causeway entrance.
From CSMT, take Metro Line 3 toward Haji Ali station.
From Mumbai Central, take Metro Line 3 a couple of stops to Haji Ali station.
Siddhivinayak Temple
Siddhivinayak Temple in Prabhadevi is dedicated to Lord Ganesh and is among the wealthiest and most visited Hindu temples in India, drawing everyone from ordinary devotees to Bollywood celebrities and politicians. Built over 200 years ago and expanded significantly since, the temple's small original sanctum now sits within a larger complex built to accommodate the volume of daily visitors, particularly heavy on Tuesdays, considered an especially auspicious day for Ganesh worship. The wooden doors of the sanctum are carved with images of the eight forms of Ganesh, and the inner dome is gold-plated. Queues can be long, especially during festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, so visiting outside peak morning and evening prayer times is more comfortable for a first visit.
From the airport, take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to Prabhadevi, roughly 45-60 minutes depending on traffic; there's no direct metro connection to the temple itself.
From CSMT, take a Western or Central Line suburban local train to Dadar station, then a short taxi or auto-rickshaw for the final 1.5 km to the temple.
From Mumbai Central, take a suburban local train to Dadar station, then a short taxi or auto-rickshaw to the temple.
