Top Places to Visit in Lagos
Lekki Conservation Centre
Lekki Conservation Centre is a protected nature reserve on the Lekki Peninsula, home to Africa's longest canopy walkway, a 401-meter suspension bridge strung between tall trees roughly 60 feet above the forest floor. Below and around it, mangroves and swamp forest host monkeys, crocodiles, peacocks and a wide range of birdlife, offering a genuinely quiet, green counterpoint to Lagos's density and traffic. A giant chessboard and picnic areas near the entrance make it popular with families as well as visitors looking for a short escape from the city. The walkway can sway noticeably underfoot, which is part of the appeal for some visitors and best avoided by anyone uneasy with heights.
Murtala Muhammed International Airport is in Ikeja on the mainland, roughly an hour's drive from Lekki depending on traffic; there's no rail link, so arrange a taxi, ride-hail, or hotel transfer.
Lagos has no passenger rail service reaching the Lekki Peninsula; the centre is accessible by road only.
The Lagos Blue Line rail and BRT network don't yet extend to the Lekki Peninsula (a Green Line rail extension to Lekki is planned but not yet built); a taxi or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach the centre from anywhere in the city.
Nike Art Gallery
Nike Art Gallery, spread across five floors in Lekki, holds one of the largest private collections of Nigerian art in Africa, with an estimated 7,000 to 8,000 pieces spanning paintings, sculpture, textiles and beadwork from artists and traditions across the country. It was founded by Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye, a well-known textile artist who built the gallery as both a showcase and a working space, and visitors occasionally encounter artists at work on-site. Admission is free, and pieces throughout the gallery are for sale, making it as much a place to buy original Nigerian art directly from a serious collection as it is a museum visit. A thorough walk through all five floors can easily take a couple of hours.
From Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, arrange a taxi or ride-hail to Lekki; the drive is roughly an hour depending on traffic, with no rail alternative.
Lagos has no passenger rail service reaching Lekki; the gallery is accessible by road only.
No BRT or rail line currently reaches this part of Lekki; a taxi or ride-hailing app from anywhere in Lagos is the standard way in.
Freedom Park
Freedom Park occupies the site of Broad Street Prison, a colonial-era jail on Lagos Island that once held Nigerian independence figures including Herbert Macaulay and Obafemi Awolowo. Reopened in 2010 as a cultural and recreational space, it kept elements of the original prison architecture, including watchtowers and cell blocks, now repurposed as galleries, performance stages and a small amphitheater. It regularly hosts concerts, film screenings and art exhibitions, and its open-air bars and restaurants make it a popular evening spot as well as a daytime historical site. The contrast between its punitive past and its current role as a gathering place is central to what makes a visit worthwhile.
From Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, take a taxi or ride-hail toward Lagos Island; allow 45-75 minutes depending on traffic, as there's no direct rail link.
Lagos has no conventional passenger railway station serving Lagos Island directly; the Blue Line light rail terminates at Marina, a short taxi or walk from the park.
The Blue Line light rail runs from Mile 2 to Marina, a short walk or taxi ride from Freedom Park on Lagos Island.
National Museum Lagos
The National Museum in Onikan holds one of Nigeria's most significant collections of historical and cultural artifacts, including royal regalia, traditional masks, musical instruments, and archaeological pieces from across the country's many ethnic groups. Works by prominent Nigerian artists such as Bruce Onobrakpeya sit alongside older ceremonial objects, giving the museum both a historical and contemporary dimension. It's smaller and less polished than major Western museums, which some visitors find adds to rather than detracts from the experience, and it periodically runs workshops and classes on Nigerian art and craft traditions. It sits close to Freedom Park and Lagos Island's other historic sites, making the two an easy pairing.
From Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, take a taxi or ride-hail toward Onikan on Lagos Island; allow 45-75 minutes depending on traffic.
Lagos has no conventional passenger railway station near Onikan; the Blue Line light rail terminates at Marina, a short taxi ride away.
The Blue Line light rail runs to Marina; from there it's a short taxi ride to the museum in Onikan.
Tarkwa Bay Beach
Tarkwa Bay is a sheltered beach on a small peninsula near the entrance to Lagos Harbour, reachable only by boat, which keeps it noticeably quieter than the city's mainland beaches. Calm, breakwater-protected water makes it one of the few swimmable beaches close to central Lagos, and a small fishing and boating community gives the area a low-key, unpolished character compared to more developed resort beaches further along the coast. Simple beachside shacks sell grilled fish and drinks, and the short boat ride itself, departing from jetties near Marina or Falomo, is part of the appeal. There's no formal infrastructure beyond the basics, so it suits visitors looking for an unpretentious beach day rather than a resort experience.
From Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, take a taxi or ride-hail to a jetty near Marina or Falomo on Lagos Island, then a short boat crossing to the beach; there is no direct route.
Lagos has no rail service to the departure jetties; reach Marina or Falomo by road, then continue by boat.
The Blue Line light rail runs to Marina, close to one of the boat departure points for Tarkwa Bay; a short boat ride covers the final leg, as the beach itself has no road access.
