Top Places to Visit in Kano

Kano City Walls

The Kano City Walls, begun in the 14th century and expanded over subsequent centuries, once ranked among the largest defensive fortifications in Africa, enclosing the old city with ramparts that in places reached 30 to 50 feet high and stretched roughly 14 kilometers around. A UNESCO tentative World Heritage Site, the walls were built primarily from packed earth (banco) reinforced over generations, and though large stretches have eroded or been absorbed into the modern city, significant sections and several of the original gates remain visible today. Thirteen historic gates, including Kofar Mata and Kofar Dan Agundi, once controlled access to the old city and played roles in festivals and processions beyond their original defensive purpose. Walking or driving along surviving sections gives a genuine sense of the scale of pre-colonial Hausa city planning, best combined with a visit to the Emir's Palace and Gidan Makama Museum within the walls.

Gidan Makama Museum

Gidan Makama Museum occupies a 15th-century building that once served as a temporary royal residence before the current Emir's Palace, Gidan Rumfa, was constructed, and it now functions as Kano's principal museum of local history and Hausa culture. Its 11 galleries, arranged around a traditional Sudanic-style courtyard, cover topics ranging from Kano's role in trans-Saharan trade to traditional weapons, musical instruments and the broader history of the Hausa emirate system. The building itself, recognized as a Nigerian National Monument, is considered as significant an attraction as its collections, with thick mud-brick walls and traditional decorative plasterwork characteristic of Hausa architecture. Sitting directly opposite the Emir's Palace, it offers useful historical context before or after a visit to the palace grounds and the old city more broadly.

Kurmi Market

Kurmi Market, established in the 15th century under King Muhammad Rumfa, is considered one of the oldest continuously operating markets in Africa and a historic hub of the trans-Saharan trade that once connected Kano to North Africa and beyond. Its deliberately maze-like layout of narrow alleys, a design feature rather than an accident, spreads across sections specializing in leather goods, brassware, hand-woven textiles, spices and traditional crafts, much of it still made using techniques passed down through generations of Kano's artisan families. Getting pleasantly lost within its lanes is very much part of the experience, and vendors are generally used to visitors browsing rather than committing to immediate purchases, though bargaining is standard practice throughout. As one of Kano's oldest surviving commercial institutions, it offers a genuinely unfiltered look at the trade traditions that built the city's historical wealth, distinct from more curated tourist-oriented markets elsewhere.

Emir's Palace (Gidan Rumfa)

The Emir's Palace, known locally as Gidan Rumfa, was established in the late 15th century by Muhammad Rumfa and remains the official residence of the Emir of Kano, one of Nigeria's most historically significant traditional rulers, making it among the oldest continuously occupied royal residences in West Africa. Its sprawling complex blends traditional Hausa architectural elements with later additions reflecting different periods of the emirate's history, and while the palace's private quarters remain closed to the public given its active royal function, sections of the grounds and certain ceremonial spaces can be viewed as part of organized visits. The palace and the surrounding old city played a central role in the Kano Durbar Festival, an elaborate horseback procession and ceremony held during major Islamic holidays, drawing large crowds and considerable pageantry when it occurs. Its position at the historic heart of walled Kano, adjacent to Gidan Makama Museum, anchors the old city's most significant cluster of heritage sites.

Kofar Mata Dye Pits

The Kofar Mata Dye Pits, established in 1498, are believed to be the oldest continuously operating indigo dye pits in Africa, where craftsmen still use traditional fermentation methods largely unchanged over more than five centuries to produce deeply colored indigo-dyed cotton fabric. White cloth is repeatedly dipped into deep pits containing a fermented indigo mixture, developing its color gradually with each immersion, a slow, hands-on process that visitors can watch firsthand as dyers work the pits and stretch finished fabric out to dry nearby. The dye pits sit near one of the historic city gates, Kofar Mata, from which they take their name, within walking distance of Kurmi Market and the old city's other heritage sites. Finished indigo cloth, along with ready-made garments dyed on-site, is generally available to purchase directly, offering a genuine, traceable connection between the craft demonstration and the goods for sale.
