Top Places to Visit in Lahore
Badshahi Mosque
Badshahi Mosque was completed in 1673 under Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and remained the largest mosque in the world for over 300 years, a scale still evident in its 100,000-person courtyard capacity and three marble domes rising above red sandstone walls. Its four 196-foot minarets and elaborate marble inlay work represent late Mughal architecture at its most ambitious, built to project imperial power as much as religious devotion. A small museum within the mosque complex, the Hazuri Bagh side chamber, displays relics including a cloak and hair believed to have belonged to the Prophet Muhammad. The mosque sits directly beside Lahore Fort, and the pigeons that gather in its courtyard, fed by visitors around late afternoon, are almost as much a fixture of the site as the architecture itself.

Lahore Fort
Lahore Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside Shalimar Gardens, has been rebuilt and expanded by successive rulers since the 11th century, with most of what survives today dating from the Mughal era. Highlights include the Sheesh Mahal, a mirrored palace hall built by Shah Jahan, the Naulakha Pavilion with its marble-columned reception room, and the Alamgiri Gate, the fort's massive main entrance and one of Lahore's most recognized landmarks. The complex blends Mughal, Sikh and British colonial-era additions, reflecting the successive powers that controlled Lahore over the centuries, and its elevated walls offer views over the surrounding Walled City. Hiring a guide at the entrance is worth it given the layered history spread across the site's many courtyards and halls.

Shalimar Gardens
Shalimar Gardens is a terraced Mughal garden built in 1641 under Emperor Shah Jahan, laid out across three descending levels connected by a stepped water channel fed by more than 400 fountains, a design meant to evoke paradise as described in Islamic tradition. The Shah Burj, an octagonal marble pavilion, sits at the garden's highest terrace and offers the best vantage point over the fountains and reflecting pools below. A mango grove within the grounds fruits in early summer, drawing visitors specifically for the harvest in June and July. Quieter and more spread out than Lahore's other major sites, the gardens offer a slower, more contemplative visit, and the fountains are typically run only at scheduled times, so checking ahead helps time a visit to see them active.

Wazir Khan Mosque
Wazir Khan Mosque, completed in 1641, is considered one of the most richly decorated mosques from the Mughal era, its facade and interior covered in intricate kashi-kari faience tile mosaics in floral and geometric patterns that have been undergoing careful restoration in recent years. Tucked within the dense lanes of the Walled City, reaching it means passing through some of Lahore's oldest surviving neighborhoods, narrow streets lined with historic havelis and small workshops that are worth taking slowly rather than rushing through. The mosque's frescoed ceilings and calligraphy panels are considered a high point of Mughal decorative art, arguably surpassing even Badshahi Mosque in the density of its ornamentation, despite its much smaller footprint. It remains an active neighborhood mosque as well as a heritage site.

Minar-e-Pakistan
Minar-e-Pakistan marks the site where the 1940 Lahore Resolution was adopted, the political declaration widely regarded as the founding call for a separate Muslim state that would become Pakistan. The 197-foot minaret, completed in 1968, blends architectural motifs from across the country's regions in its base and combines Mughal and modern design elements in its tapering tower, intended to represent national unity. It stands within Iqbal Park (formerly Minto Park), a large green space popular with local families for picnics and evening walks, giving the monument a more everyday, civic character alongside its historical weight. An elevator and staircase lead to an observation area near the top, offering a wide view over the surrounding park and the Walled City beyond.
