Top Places to Visit in Peshawar
Bala Hisar Fort
Bala Hisar Fort, standing on an elevated mound in Peshawar's northwestern corner, has origins tracing back centuries, with the current structure largely dating to Sikh and later British colonial-era reconstruction atop earlier Mughal-period fortifications, its name meaning High Fort in Persian and Urdu. Now under the control of Pakistan's Frontier Corps, the fort remains a functioning military installation, meaning access for visitors is generally more restricted than at a purely historical site, with certain areas open only through advance arrangement. Its elevated position offers sweeping views across Peshawar's old city, including the rooftops of Qissa Khwani Bazaar below, giving a strong sense of the old city's layout and scale. A small museum within the fort displays military artifacts and historical items connected to the site's long use as a strategic garrison controlling the approach toward the Khyber Pass.
No fixed-route public transit reliably serves Bala Hisar Fort from Peshawar's Bacha Khan International Airport; a taxi, rickshaw, or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach it, roughly 20-30 minutes depending on traffic.
From Peshawar Railway Station, take a taxi or rickshaw to Bala Hisar Fort, roughly 15-20 minutes.
From Peshawar's intercity bus terminals, take a taxi or rickshaw to Bala Hisar Fort.
Qissa Khwani Bazaar
Qissa Khwani Bazaar, meaning the Bazaar of Storytellers, has served as Peshawar's principal marketplace for centuries, historically a gathering point along the Silk Road where traders and travelers exchanged goods and, as the name suggests, tales from their journeys over tea. Its narrow lanes remain densely packed with shops selling spices, dried fruit, textiles, jewelry and handicrafts, while the aroma of Peshawari kebabs and other grilled specialties fills the air from the many food stalls scattered throughout. The bazaar carries significant political weight in Pakistani history as the site of a 1930 massacre, when British colonial forces killed a large number of unarmed protesters during a demonstration, an event that helped galvanize the independence movement in the region. Despite its age, the bazaar functions as a genuinely active commercial district rather than a preserved historical site, giving visitors a direct sense of Peshawar's everyday trading life alongside its layered history.
No fixed-route public transit reliably serves the old city bazaars from Bacha Khan International Airport; a taxi, rickshaw, or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach Qissa Khwani Bazaar.

Peshawar Museum
Peshawar Museum, housed in a Victorian-era building completed in 1907, holds one of the finest collections of Gandhara art and Buddhist sculpture anywhere in the world, reflecting the region's role as a major center of Greco-Buddhist civilization roughly 2,000 years ago. Stone sculptures depicting scenes from the life of Buddha, carved in a style blending Greek artistic techniques with Buddhist religious subject matter, form the core of the collection, a legacy of the region's position along ancient trade routes linking South Asia, Central Asia and the Mediterranean world. Beyond the Gandhara collection, the museum also holds galleries on Islamic-era coins, ethnographic displays and material from the region's more recent colonial history. Given Peshawar's often-overlooked significance as a center of ancient Buddhist civilization, the museum offers essential context for understanding a chapter of South Asian history that predates the region's better-known Islamic period by many centuries.
No fixed-route public transit reliably serves the museum from Bacha Khan International Airport; a taxi, rickshaw, or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach it.
From Peshawar Railway Station, take a taxi or rickshaw to Peshawar Museum, roughly 10-15 minutes.

Mahabat Khan Mosque
Mahabat Khan Mosque was built in 1630 by Nawab Mahabat Khan, a Mughal governor of Peshawar, and remains one of the finest surviving examples of Mughal religious architecture in the region, its white marble facade and twin minarets standing out sharply within the dense surrounding lanes of the old city. Intricate frescoes and decorative calligraphy cover portions of the interior, showcasing the skill of the Mughal-era craftsmen commissioned for the project, and the mosque's large open courtyard remains in active use for daily prayers as well as major Islamic holidays. Reaching the mosque involves navigating through the Sarafa Bazaar, a jewelry and gold market whose narrow, congested lanes are themselves part of the old city experience, before arriving at the mosque's southern entrance. As with any active mosque, modest dress is expected, and visiting outside of prayer times generally allows for a calmer look at the architecture and interior decoration.
No fixed-route public transit reliably serves the old city from Bacha Khan International Airport; a taxi, rickshaw, or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach the mosque.
From Peshawar Railway Station, take a taxi or rickshaw into the old city to Mahabat Khan Mosque, roughly 10-15 minutes.

Sethi House Museum
The Sethi House Museum, in the old city's Sethi Mohallah neighborhood, was built in the late 19th century by the wealthy Sethi merchant family, whose extensive trading networks across Central Asia, Russia and beyond financed a mansion far more elaborate than most other residential buildings in Peshawar's old city. The house's interior features imported materials and decorative elements reflecting the family's international trading connections, including elaborately carved wooden ceilings, colored glasswork and ventilation systems designed for Peshawar's hot summers, all considered unusually sophisticated for a private residence of its era. Now restored and opened as a heritage museum, it offers a rare glimpse into the domestic life of Peshawar's merchant elite during the late Mughal and British colonial periods, a different perspective from the city's more commonly visited military and religious sites. Several other historic Sethi family houses remain in the same neighborhood, some still occupied, giving the surrounding streets a genuine sense of continuity with the mansion's original era.
No fixed-route public transit reliably serves the old city from Bacha Khan International Airport; a taxi, rickshaw, or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach the Sethi House.
From Peshawar Railway Station, take a taxi or rickshaw into the old city to Sethi Mohallah, roughly 10-15 minutes.
From Peshawar's intercity bus terminals, take a taxi or rickshaw into the old city to Sethi Mohallah.
