Top Places to Visit in Karachi
Mazar-e-Quaid (Jinnah's Mausoleum)
Mazar-e-Quaid is the mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, its white marble structure and modernist geometric dome making it one of Karachi's most recognizable landmarks. Completed in 1971, decades after Jinnah's death in 1948, the mausoleum sits within landscaped gardens on an elevated platform, with a changing-of-the-guard ceremony taking place at set times through the day. Jinnah's sister, Fatima Jinnah, known as the Mother of the Nation, is buried alongside him, along with several other early Pakistani political figures. The surrounding park includes a separate amusement area popular with local families, giving the site a dual character as both a solemn national monument and an everyday public park.
Jinnah International Airport is a short distance from the mausoleum; take a taxi, rickshaw, or ride-hailing app, typically 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. A Green Line BRT route also runs between the airport area and the city center.
From City Railway Station (Karachi's main railway terminus), take the Green Line BRT directly toward Mazar-e-Quaid station.
From Sohrab Goth intercity bus terminal, take a taxi or rickshaw toward Mazar-e-Quaid, or connect to the Green Line BRT toward the mausoleum.
Frere Hall
Frere Hall was built in 1865 during British colonial rule, named for Sir Bartle Frere, a colonial administrator, and served as Karachi's town hall for decades before falling into disrepair and later being restored. Its Gothic and Venetian-influenced architecture, with pointed arches and a steep clock tower, sits within landscaped gardens that remain a popular gathering spot for evening walks. The upper floor houses the Sadequain Gallery, displaying a large, striking ceiling mural by the noted Pakistani artist Sadequain, painted directly onto the hall's interior. On Sundays, the grounds host a used-book market that draws a loyal following among Karachi's readers, adding a lived-in, everyday character to what's otherwise a formal colonial-era monument.
From Jinnah International Airport, take a taxi, rickshaw, or ride-hailing app toward Saddar; allow 30-45 minutes depending on traffic.
From City Railway Station, take a taxi or rickshaw toward Frere Hall in the nearby Saddar area, a relatively short ride.
From Sohrab Goth intercity bus terminal, take a taxi or rickshaw toward Saddar and Frere Hall.
Clifton Beach
Clifton Beach is Karachi's best-known stretch of shoreline along the Arabian Sea, a wide sandy beach that draws large crowds in the evenings, especially on weekends, for camel and horse rides, kite flying and street food stalls set up along the promenade. It's less a place for swimming, given the water quality and strong currents, than a social space where Karachiites come to relax, watch the sunset and eat from the food carts lining the beachfront. The shrine of Abdullah Shah Ghazi sits on a rocky outcrop overlooking the beach and is a notable landmark and pilgrimage site in its own right. The nearby Do Darya waterfront, with its restaurants and sea views, has become a popular extension of an evening at Clifton for those wanting a sit-down meal after the beach.
From Jinnah International Airport, take a taxi, rickshaw, or ride-hailing app toward Clifton; allow 30-45 minutes depending on traffic.
From City Railway Station, take a taxi or rickshaw toward Clifton, roughly 30 minutes depending on traffic.
From Sohrab Goth intercity bus terminal, take a taxi or rickshaw toward Clifton, roughly 45-60 minutes depending on traffic.
Empress Market
Empress Market was built in 1889 during British rule and named for Queen Victoria, its red sandstone clock tower still standing as a Saddar-district landmark despite the market's contested and difficult colonial-era origins, built on the site of a mutiny-related execution ground. Inside, vendors sell everything from fresh produce, spices and meat to pets, household goods and fabric, spread across a dense grid of stalls under the building's high arched interior. It remains one of Karachi's busiest traditional markets, loud and crowded, and a good place to get a sense of everyday commerce in the city rather than a curated tourist experience. The surrounding Saddar neighborhood holds several other colonial-era buildings worth a look on the same outing.
From Jinnah International Airport, take a taxi, rickshaw, or ride-hailing app toward Saddar; allow 30-45 minutes depending on traffic.
From City Railway Station, take a taxi or rickshaw toward Saddar and Empress Market, a short ride.
From Sohrab Goth intercity bus terminal, take a taxi or rickshaw toward Saddar.
Mohatta Palace Museum
Mohatta Palace was built in 1927 as a seaside residence for Shivratan Mohatta, a wealthy Hindu merchant, using pink Jodhpur stone and yellow Gizri stone to echo the palace architecture of Rajasthan. After Partition in 1947 the building passed through government use, including a period as Fatima Jinnah's residence, before opening in 1999 as a museum focused on Sindhi art, culture and history. Its domed towers, arched balconies and formal gardens make it one of Karachi's most photogenic buildings, and temporary exhibitions covering contemporary Pakistani art run alongside the permanent collection. It sits in Clifton, making it easy to combine with a visit to Clifton Beach or the nearby Do Darya waterfront on the same trip.
