Top Places to Visit in Hefei
Sanhe Ancient Town
Sanhe Ancient Town, about 30 kilometers south of central Hefei, takes its name from the three rivers that converge here, and its history as a trading settlement stretches back more than 2,500 years. Stone-paved streets lined with wooden shopfronts and Hui-style architecture, characterized by white walls and black tiled roofs typical of the wider Anhui region, run alongside the town's waterways, crossed by a series of small arched bridges. During the Taiping Rebellion in the 1850s, the town was the site of a significant battle, and some of its old fortifications and historical sites tied to that conflict remain part of the local heritage on display. Boat rides along the canals offer a slower-paced way to see the town's waterside architecture, and its relative distance from central Hefei means it draws a more relaxed, less rushed crowd than some closer-in attractions.
Sanhe Ancient Town sits about 30 km outside central Hefei with no direct metro connection; take a taxi, ride-hailing app, or a long-distance bus from Hefei toward Feixi County and Sanhe.
From Hefei Railway Station, take a taxi, ride-hailing app, or a long-distance bus toward Feixi County and Sanhe Ancient Town, as it sits outside the metro network's reach.
From Hefei's long-distance bus stations, look for a bus bound for Sanhe or Feixi County, a common route given the town's popularity as a day-trip destination.
Anhui Museum
The Anhui Museum, in its newer building in Shushan District, holds more than 220,000 artifacts spanning Anhui province's history from prehistoric times through the modern era, making it the province's principal comprehensive museum for archaeology, art and natural history. Bronze vessels from the Shang and Zhou dynasties feature prominently among the collection's highlights, alongside calligraphy, painting and ceramics reflecting the artistic traditions of the wider Jiangnan region. The building's design draws on traditional Hui-style architecture, characterized by its distinctive horse-head gable walls, reinterpreted in a modern form that connects the museum visually to the historic villages found throughout southern Anhui. Its Journey Through Anhui exhibit offers a chronological overview of the province's history, making it a useful starting point for visitors before exploring the province's other historical sites, including Sanhe Ancient Town.

Baogong Park (Lord Bao Park)
Baogong Park, covering roughly 32 hectares along the Baohe River, is dedicated to Bao Zheng, a Song-dynasty official born near Hefei in 999 AD and remembered as one of Chinese history's most celebrated symbols of judicial integrity and incorruptibility. The park includes the Memorial Temple of Lord Bao, displaying artifacts and exhibits on his life and legendary reputation for fairness regardless of a defendant's wealth or status, along with his restored tomb and a small museum tracing the discovery and reburial of his remains. Qingfeng Pavilion, meaning Pure Wind Pavilion, and the surrounding landscaped grounds offer a quieter, more contemplative counterpart to the historical exhibits, popular with local residents for walks and relaxation well beyond the park's commemorative function. Bao Zheng's legend has been retold so often in Chinese opera, literature and television that the park functions as much as a piece of living folklore as a historical site.

Li Hongzhang's Former Residence
Li Hongzhang's Former Residence, on Hefei's Huaihe Road pedestrian street, was the family home of one of the most influential and controversial statesmen of the late Qing dynasty, a figure who oversaw much of China's late-19th-century modernization efforts and negotiated several of the unequal treaties that followed China's military defeats of the era. The well-preserved late-Qing-style residence includes multiple courtyards and halls displaying period furniture, personal artifacts and documents relating to Li's diplomatic and military career, offering insight into the domestic life of a senior Qing official alongside his more widely known public history. Li remains a genuinely divisive figure in Chinese historical memory, credited by some with pragmatic modernization efforts and criticized by others for the territorial and financial concessions made under treaties he signed, a tension the museum's exhibits engage with to varying degrees. Its location directly on Hefei's main pedestrian shopping street makes it an easy stop to combine with browsing the surrounding shops and restaurants.

Xiaoyaojin Park
Xiaoyaojin Park, Hefei's largest and most popular open city park, occupies the site of what tradition holds was a decisive Three Kingdoms-era battle between the forces of Cao Cao and Sun Quan in 215 AD, though the park today is oriented almost entirely toward recreation rather than historical commemoration. Landscaped lawns, a lake, forested walking paths and a small artificial beach make it a popular gathering spot for Hefei residents throughout the year, particularly for spring picnics when the park's trees and flowering plants are at their most colorful. Statues and light installations scattered through the grounds add visual interest to what's primarily an everyday green space rather than a curated tourist attraction, giving visitors a good sense of ordinary local life in Hefei. Its central location within the city makes it easy to combine with other nearby sights, including Li Hongzhang's Former Residence on the adjacent pedestrian street.
From Hefei Xinqiao International Airport, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to the park, or connect via the metro toward a central interchange.
