Top Places to Visit in Tokyo

Senso-ji Temple

Senso-ji is Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in 645 AD after two fishermen reportedly pulled a small statue of the bodhisattva Kannon from the Sumida River. Its approach runs through Kaminarimon, the Thunder Gate, marked by a massive red paper lantern, and continues down Nakamise-dori, a shopping street of more than 200 years' standing selling traditional snacks and souvenirs to the temple's main hall. Despite the temple's ancient origins, the current buildings are mid-20th-century reconstructions, since the originals burned down in the 1945 firebombing of Tokyo, though the atmosphere and layout still evoke the Edo period. A five-story pagoda stands beside the main hall, and the surrounding Asakusa district retains more traditional character than most of central Tokyo, with rickshaw pullers still touting rides near the temple gates.

From the airport

From Narita Airport, take the Keisei Skyliner or Narita Express to Ueno, transfer to the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, and ride to Asakusa station, right by the temple.

From the railway station

From Tokyo Station, take the Marunouchi Line to Ginza, transfer to the Ginza Line, and ride to Asakusa station.

From the bus stand

From Busta Shinjuku (Shinjuku Bus Terminal), take the JR line or Metro toward a central interchange and transfer to the Ginza Line to reach Asakusa station.

Meiji Shrine

Meiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, completed in 1920 and set within a forest of some 100,000 trees donated from across Japan at the time of its construction, now a genuinely dense, mature woodland despite sitting in the middle of the city. A towering wooden torii gate marks the entrance to the grounds, and the walk to the main shrine buildings takes visitors well away from the sound of traffic within a few minutes. Traditional Shinto weddings are held here regularly, and visitors sometimes glimpse a wedding procession crossing the grounds in full ceremonial dress. The adjoining Meiji Jingu Gyoen inner garden, particularly its iris garden in June, offers a quieter, more contained space than the main shrine grounds.

From the airport

From Narita Airport, take the Narita Express directly to Shinjuku, then a short walk or one stop on the JR Yamanote Line to Harajuku station, at the shrine's entrance.

Shibuya Crossing

Shibuya Crossing is widely described as the busiest pedestrian intersection in the world, with as many as 3,000 people crossing at once when the lights change, from as many as eight directions simultaneously. It sits directly outside Shibuya Station, beside the bronze statue of Hachiko, the loyal Akita dog who famously continued waiting at the station for his deceased owner every day for years, now a well-known meeting point in its own right. The crossing is at its most visually striking after dark, when the surrounding buildings' video screens and neon signage light up the scramble below, and several nearby cafes and buildings offer elevated views for watching the crossing from above rather than joining it. Shibuya's surrounding streets are also one of Tokyo's major shopping and youth culture districts.

Tokyo Skytree

Tokyo Skytree, completed in 2012, stands 634 meters tall and is the tallest tower in the world, built primarily as a broadcasting tower but also home to two observation decks at 350 and 450 meters. On clear days, particularly in winter, Mount Fuji is visible from the upper deck alongside a sweeping view over the entire Tokyo metropolitan area. The tower's base houses Tokyo Skytree Town, a large shopping and dining complex including an aquarium and a planetarium, giving visitors plenty to do if the weather isn't cooperating for the observation decks. It sits a short walk or one train stop from Asakusa and Senso-ji, across the Sumida River, making the two easy to combine into one outing, particularly scenic if timed to cross the river around sunset.

From Narita Airport, take the Keisei Skyliner or Narita Express to Ueno, transfer to the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line to Asakusa, then transfer to the Tobu Skytree Line one stop to Tokyo Skytree station.

Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower, completed in 1958 and modeled loosely on the Eiffel Tower, was Japan's tallest structure for over 50 years and remains one of Tokyo's most recognizable landmarks despite being surpassed in height by Tokyo Skytree. Painted white and international orange to comply with aviation safety regulations, it houses two observation decks, the higher of which sits at 250 meters, along with shops, a wax museum and other attractions at its base. Its illumination changes seasonally and for special events, and it's a particularly popular backdrop in spring when framed by cherry blossoms in the surrounding Shiba Park, or paired with views of Zojo-ji, a historic Buddhist temple immediately next door. Compared to the newer, taller Skytree, Tokyo Tower tends to draw a slightly more nostalgic, retro appeal.

From the airport

From Narita Airport, take the Narita Express to Tokyo Station, transfer to the Oedo Line or a connecting bus/taxi toward Kamiyacho or Akabanebashi station, both a short walk from the tower.

From the railway station
