Top Places to Visit in Cairo
Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx
The Pyramids of Giza, built roughly 4,500 years ago as tombs for the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, are the last surviving of the ancient world's Seven Wonders and remain Egypt's single most recognizable landmark. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, the largest of the three, was the tallest man-made structure in the world for nearly 3,800 years, and visitors can pay separately to enter its interior passages, though the experience is cramped and not included in general admission. The Great Sphinx, a limestone statue with a lion's body and a human head believed to represent Khafre, sits nearby facing east, its nose famously missing for reasons still debated by historians. The plateau sits at the edge of modern Giza, so the pyramids rise directly behind residential streets and shops, a jarring but memorable contrast that photographs don't always convey.
Cairo's metro doesn't reach the Giza Plateau directly; a taxi or ride-hailing app (Uber, Careem) from Cairo International Airport is the standard way to reach it, typically 45-60 minutes depending on traffic.
From Ramses Station, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to the Giza Plateau, as the metro doesn't run directly to the pyramids.
From Cairo Gateway (Turgoman) bus station, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to the Giza Plateau.
Egyptian Museum
The Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square has held the world's largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities since 1902, with more than 120,000 artifacts spanning the full sweep of ancient Egyptian history. Its best-known holdings are the treasures of Tutankhamun, including his solid gold funerary mask, though a significant portion of the Tutankhamun collection has been relocating to the newer Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza as that site continues opening in phases. The museum's older, densely packed exhibition style, with artifacts crowded into aging wooden cases rather than modern interpretive displays, has its own old-world charm even as parts of the collection move elsewhere. A separate Royal Mummies Hall, requiring an additional ticket, holds the preserved remains of many of Egypt's most famous pharaohs.
Take the Cairo Metro from the airport area (via a connecting bus or taxi to the nearest station) to Sadat station, directly beneath Tahrir Square and the museum.
From Ramses Station, take Line 1 or Line 2 of the Cairo Metro directly to Sadat station.
From Cairo Gateway (Turgoman) bus station, take a short taxi ride or walk to Sadat station and the museum.
Khan el-Khalili
Khan el-Khalili has operated as Cairo's main bazaar since the 14th century, a dense maze of covered alleys selling spices, jewelry, brassware, textiles, perfumes and souvenirs, still functioning as a working market for locals as much as a tourist destination. El Fishawy, one of Cairo's oldest continuously operating coffeehouses, has served mint tea and shisha from the same spot near the market's edge since the 1770s, and remains a popular stop for people-watching. The surrounding streets, including the medieval Al-Muizz Street, hold some of Cairo's finest Islamic-era architecture, with mosques, madrasas and historic gates within easy walking distance of the market itself. Bargaining is standard practice throughout, and the market is busiest, and arguably most atmospheric, in the evening.
Cairo's metro doesn't reach directly into Khan el-Khalili; a taxi or ride-hailing app from the airport is the standard way to reach it, or take the metro to Ataba station and continue on foot or by short taxi ride.
From Ramses Station, take a taxi or ride-hailing app, or take the metro to Ataba station and continue on foot.
From Cairo Gateway (Turgoman) bus station, Khan el-Khalili is a relatively short taxi ride or walk away.
Cairo Citadel
The Citadel of Saladin was built in the 12th century as a fortress to defend Cairo against Crusader attacks and remained the seat of Egypt's rulers for nearly 700 years afterward. Its most striking structure today is the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, built in the early 1800s in an Ottoman style with a large central dome and twin minarets, its alabaster-clad interior giving it the popular nickname the Alabaster Mosque. From the Citadel's elevated walls, views stretch across Cairo's rooftops and minarets toward the Pyramids of Giza on a clear day, one of the better vantage points in the city for taking in its scale. The grounds also include several other mosques and museums, including a military museum, giving the site enough to fill a couple of hours beyond the main mosque alone.
Cairo's metro doesn't reach directly to the Citadel; a taxi or ride-hailing app from the airport is the standard way to reach it, typically 30-40 minutes depending on traffic.
From Ramses Station, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to the Citadel.
From Cairo Gateway (Turgoman) bus station, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to the Citadel.
Coptic Cairo
Coptic Cairo preserves the walled remains of Fustat, a Roman-era fortress town, and centers on a cluster of some of Egypt's oldest Christian sites, including the Hanging Church, suspended above the fortress gatehouse and dating in its current form to the 7th century. The Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus, built where tradition holds the Holy Family sheltered during their flight into Egypt, and the Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of Cairo's oldest surviving synagogues, sit within the same walkable area, reflecting the district's layered religious history. The Coptic Museum, at the neighborhood's entrance, holds one of the world's most significant collections of Coptic Christian art and artifacts. The narrow, quiet lanes here offer a markedly different pace from the rest of Cairo, worth exploring slowly rather than rushing between sites.
Take the Cairo Metro from the airport area (via a connecting bus or taxi to the nearest station) to Mar Girgis station, directly at the entrance to Coptic Cairo.
From Ramses Station, take Line 1 of the Cairo Metro directly to Mar Girgis station.
From Cairo Gateway (Turgoman) bus station, take a taxi or the metro (via a connecting walk to the nearest station) to Mar Girgis station.
