Top Places to Visit in Alexandria
Bibliotheca Alexandrina
Bibliotheca Alexandrina opened in 2002 as a modern tribute to the ancient Library of Alexandria, once the largest and most significant library of the classical world before its gradual destruction over several centuries. The building's striking circular design, a tilted granite disc inscribed with characters from more than 120 different world scripts and alphabets, was chosen through an international architectural competition and has become one of Alexandria's defining modern landmarks. Inside, the main reading room can hold up to eight million books beneath a vast, gently sloping roof designed to flood the space with natural light while minimizing direct sun exposure to the collection. The complex also includes a planetarium, several specialized museums covering antiquities, manuscripts and the history of science, and a conference center, making it as much a cultural hub as a library in the traditional sense.
Alexandria has no metro system; take a taxi or ride-hailing app from Borg El Arab Airport, roughly 45-60 minutes depending on traffic, as the airport sits well outside the city center.
From Alexandria's Misr Railway Station, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to the library, roughly 15-20 minutes, or the historic Alexandria tram toward the Corniche.
From Alexandria's long-distance bus stations, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to the library.
Citadel of Qaitbay
The Citadel of Qaitbay was built in 1477 by Sultan Qaitbay on the exact site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, destroyed by earthquakes over the preceding centuries and partly incorporated into the citadel's foundations. Constructed largely from the lighthouse's own fallen stone blocks, the fortress was built to defend Alexandria's harbor from Ottoman naval threats and remains one of the most important defensive structures along the eastern Mediterranean coast. Its position on a narrow peninsula gives visitors sweeping views back across Alexandria's waterfront and out to sea, and the fortress interior includes a small naval museum and mosque. The surrounding Anfushi Fish Market, just inland from the citadel, offers a lively, working contrast to the historical site, worth a walk through for anyone interested in Alexandria's continuing relationship with the sea.

Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa
The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, dating to the 2nd century AD, are considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages and represent one of the most unusual fusions of Egyptian, Greek and Roman funerary art anywhere in the ancient world. Carved three levels deep into the limestone bedrock, the tomb complex was originally built for a single wealthy family but expanded over subsequent generations into a larger communal burial site as more families gained access. Its decoration blends traditional Egyptian gods like Anubis, depicted in full Egyptian regalia but with distinctly Roman-influenced facial features and armor, reflecting Alexandria's role as a genuine cultural crossroads under Roman rule. The lowest level remains flooded and inaccessible to visitors, a reminder of the site's rediscovery in 1900 after a donkey reportedly fell through the ground into the buried entrance.

Pompey's Pillar
Pompey's Pillar, standing nearly 27 meters tall, is one of the largest ancient monolithic columns still standing anywhere and, despite its name, has no direct connection to the Roman general Pompey, having actually been erected around 297 AD to honor Emperor Diocletian following his suppression of an Alexandrian revolt. The pink Aswan granite column originally formed part of a larger temple complex dedicated to the god Serapis, the Serapeum, whose ruins, along with underground galleries and a pair of sphinxes, remain visible around the pillar's base today. Misidentified by medieval European travelers as a monument to Pompey, the name stuck despite later archaeological correction of its actual origins. While less visually dramatic than some of Alexandria's other sites, it offers a direct physical link to the city's Greco-Roman period and pairs well with a visit to the nearby Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa.

Montaza Palace Gardens
Montaza Palace Gardens were developed starting in 1892 by Khedive Abbas II and later expanded by King Fuad I in the 1930s with the addition of the Al-Haramlik Palace, blending Ottoman and Florentine architectural styles into a royal summer residence overlooking the Mediterranean. While the palace buildings themselves are largely closed to public entry, the surrounding gardens, covering roughly 150 acres of palm groves, flowering plants and coastal cliffs, remain open and are among Alexandria's most popular green spaces for both locals and visitors. A private beach within the grounds, along with several viewpoints over the rocky coastline and a small bridge connecting to a rocky offshore outcrop, make it a popular spot for a relaxed afternoon away from the city's denser historic core. The gardens are especially popular with Alexandrian families on weekends and during the summer season, when the beach areas fill with visitors escaping the heat.
