Top Places to Visit in Taipei
Taipei 101
Taipei 101 was the world's tallest building from its completion in 2004 until 2010, its 101 floors and bamboo-inspired segmented design remaining Taipei's defining skyline landmark even after being surpassed in height elsewhere. An elevator advertised as one of the world's fastest carries visitors to the 89th-floor indoor observatory in under 40 seconds, and a further climb reaches an outdoor deck on the 91st floor for those wanting an open-air view, weather permitting. The tower's engineering highlight is a 660-ton steel pendulum, a tuned mass damper suspended between the 87th and 92nd floors, visible to visitors and designed to counteract building sway during typhoons and earthquakes. The building's base houses a large shopping mall and food court, and its exterior light show, changing colors nightly, is visible from much of the surrounding city.
From Taoyuan International Airport, take the Airport MRT to Taipei Main Station, transfer to the Red Line, and ride to Taipei 101/World Trade Center station, right at the tower's base.
Taipei Main Station connects to the Red Line; ride it directly to Taipei 101/World Trade Center station.

National Palace Museum
The National Palace Museum holds one of the world's most significant collections of Chinese imperial art and artifacts, roughly 700,000 pieces spanning nearly 8,000 years, brought to Taiwan by the Nationalist government in 1949 as it retreated from mainland China at the end of the Chinese Civil War. Signature pieces include the Jadeite Cabbage, a piece of jadeite carved to resemble a bok choy with a grasshopper and katydid on its leaves, and the Meat-Shaped Stone, a piece of banded jasper carved and dyed to resemble a braised pork belly dish, both disproportionately popular with visitors relative to their small size. Because only a fraction of the collection can be displayed at once, exhibits rotate regularly, meaning repeat visits often reveal different pieces. The museum's collection is considered so historically and politically significant that its ownership and location remain a point of occasional diplomatic sensitivity between Taiwan and mainland China.
From Taoyuan International Airport, take the Airport MRT to Taipei Main Station, transfer to the Red Line toward Shilin station, then a taxi or connecting bus (Red 30) to the museum, as it isn't directly on the MRT network.

Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall
Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, completed in 1980, honors Taiwan's former president and Nationalist Party leader with a monumental white marble structure topped by a blue-tiled octagonal roof, set within a 25-hectare park that also houses the National Theater and National Concert Hall. Inside the main hall, a large bronze statue of Chiang sits beneath the ceiling, guarded by an honor guard whose hourly changing-of-the-guard ceremony draws steady crowds throughout the day. The surrounding gardens, ponds and the sweeping Liberty Square plaza in front of the hall have become a popular general gathering and recreation space for Taipei residents well beyond the site's original commemorative purpose, hosting everything from morning exercise groups to public demonstrations reflecting Taiwan's more recent democratic history. The memorial's continued political symbolism, given Chiang's complicated legacy including the martial law period, makes it a site of ongoing public debate as well as a tourist landmark.
From Taoyuan International Airport, take the Airport MRT to Taipei Main Station, transfer to the Red or Green Line, and ride to Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall station, which opens directly into the grounds.

Longshan Temple
Longshan Temple, founded in 1738 by settlers from Fujian province, is Taipei's oldest and most significant temple, dedicated primarily to Guanyin, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, alongside a wide range of Taoist and folk deities reflecting the syncretic nature of Taiwanese popular religion. Its ornate roofline, densely decorated with ceramic figurines depicting scenes from Chinese mythology, and its elaborately carved stone dragon pillars represent some of the finest traditional temple craftsmanship in Taiwan, largely rebuilt after damage sustained during World War II bombing. The temple remains a genuinely active place of worship rather than a purely historical site, with worshippers burning incense and making offerings throughout the day, particularly busy during religious festivals. The surrounding Wanhua district, one of Taipei's oldest neighborhoods, retains an older, more traditional character than much of the rest of the city, worth exploring beyond just the temple itself.
From Taoyuan International Airport, take the Airport MRT to Taipei Main Station, transfer to the Blue Line, and ride directly to Longshan Temple station.

Shilin Night Market
Shilin Night Market is Taipei's largest and most famous night market, with roots dating back more than a century, drawing both locals and visitors for a dense concentration of street food stalls, clothing shops, arcade games and general nighttime energy. Its food court in the market's basement level concentrates many of the most popular stalls in one air-conditioned space, serving Taiwanese street food staples including oyster omelets, stinky tofu, bubble tea and large fried chicken cutlets. The market spreads across a warren of surrounding streets beyond the official market building, and navigating it is as much about wandering and grazing as following any set route. It gets extremely crowded on weekend evenings, so arriving on the earlier side or visiting on a weeknight offers a somewhat less overwhelming experience of the same food and atmosphere.
From Taoyuan International Airport, take the Airport MRT to Taipei Main Station, transfer to the Red Line, and ride to Jiantan station, right at the market's edge.
