Top Places to Visit in Seoul

Gyeongbokgung Palace

Gyeongbokgung Palace, first built in 1395 as the primary royal palace of the newly founded Joseon dynasty, remains the largest and grandest of Seoul's five surviving palaces despite being destroyed and rebuilt more than once, including a major reconstruction in the 1860s after Japanese forces burned it during a 16th-century invasion. Its main throne hall, Geunjeongjeon, sits atop a two-tiered stone platform and was where kings were crowned and received foreign envoys. A changing-of-the-guard ceremony, reenacting Joseon-era royal guard rituals in full period costume, takes place at the main gate several times a day and draws large crowds. The National Folk Museum and National Palace Museum both sit within the palace grounds, offering additional context on Joseon court life for visitors who want to go beyond the architecture itself.

N Seoul Tower

N Seoul Tower sits atop Namsan Mountain at 236.7 meters, and with the hill beneath it, offers one of the highest vantage points over central Seoul from its observation decks. Built in 1969 originally as a broadcast tower and opened to the public in 1980, it has become a well-known romantic landmark, with thousands of padlocks left by couples along the fencing near its base as a symbol of lasting love. A cable car runs up Namsan from a station near Myeongdong, making the ascent easy without a long hike, though hiking trails up the mountain are also popular, especially in autumn. The tower is particularly striking after dark, when its exterior lighting changes color and the surrounding city lights spread out below in every direction.

Bukchon Hanok Village

Bukchon Hanok Village is a hillside neighborhood of roughly 900 traditional Korean hanok houses, wedged between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces in an area once home to aristocrats and royal family members during the Joseon dynasty. Many of the hanoks remain private residences today, alongside others converted into tea houses, galleries, guesthouses and small museums, giving the neighborhood a lived-in feel rather than a purely preserved-for-tourists one. Its narrow, sloped alleyways offer some of Seoul's most photographed views, particularly from a handful of designated scenic spots looking down over the tiled rooftops toward the palaces and modern skyline beyond. Because it's a residential area with real neighbors, Seoul's tourism authorities ask visitors to keep noise down, especially in the mornings and evenings.

Myeongdong

Myeongdong has been one of Seoul's principal shopping and entertainment districts since the mid-20th century, its pedestrianized main streets now dense with Korean skincare and cosmetics shops, fashion retailers and street food stalls selling everything from skewered tteokbokki to Korean-style corn dogs. It draws a mix of local shoppers, K-pop fans stocking up on merchandise, and visitors specifically seeking out Korean beauty products, with staff at many cosmetics shops fluent in multiple languages to serve the area's heavy international foot traffic. Myeongdong Cathedral, a Gothic-style Catholic church completed in 1898 and one of the earliest Western-style buildings in Korea, sits just uphill from the main shopping streets and offers a quieter contrast to the district's retail intensity. The area is busiest, and most fun, in the early evening once the street food carts fully open.

Insadong

Insadong has been Seoul's center for traditional Korean arts, crafts and antiques since the early 20th century, its main pedestrian street, Insadong-gil, lined with galleries, calligraphy and hanji paper shops, teahouses and stores selling celadon pottery and other traditional Korean crafts. The Ssamziegil shopping complex, built around a spiraling open-air walkway, is one of the area's more modern additions, mixing independent designers and craft shops across several levels. Traditional teahouses tucked into the side alleys offer a slower-paced break from the busier streets, many serving Korean teas made from ingredients like omija berries, citron or barley. Insadong sits within easy walking distance of both Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok Village, making it a natural stop to combine with either on the same day.
