Top Places to Visit in Moscow
Red Square and the Kremlin
Red Square has been the political and ceremonial heart of Moscow since the 15th century, framed by the Kremlin's red brick walls on one side and the State Historical Museum and GUM department store on the others. The Kremlin itself, a fortified complex dating in parts to the 1300s, is the official residence of Russia's president and holds several onion-domed cathedrals, the Armoury Chamber with its collection of imperial treasures including Fabergé eggs, and the Tsar Cannon and Tsar Bell, both the largest of their kind ever cast. Lenin's Mausoleum, where his embalmed body has been on public display since 1924, sits along the Kremlin wall on the square's edge. Security screening is required to enter both the square and the Kremlin grounds, and several Kremlin cathedrals close on rotating days, so checking current hours before visiting is worthwhile.
Take the Aeroexpress train from Sheremetyevo Airport to Belorussky Railway Station, then take the metro (Zamoskvoretskaya green line) to Okhotny Ryad or Teatralnaya station, both steps from Red Square.
From Belorussky Railway Station, take the Zamoskvoretskaya (green) line directly to Okhotny Ryad station.
From the Moscow Central Bus Station, take the Sokolnicheskaya (red) line toward the center and transfer as needed to reach Okhotny Ryad or Teatralnaya station.
Saint Basil's Cathedral
Saint Basil's Cathedral, built between 1555 and 1561 on the order of Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the capture of Kazan, is instantly recognizable for its cluster of colorful, individually shaped onion domes, each topping one of nine separate chapels joined into a single structure. According to a widely repeated but historically disputed legend, Ivan had the architect blinded afterward to prevent him from ever building anything as beautiful again. Inside, the chapels are smaller and more maze-like than the exterior suggests, connected by narrow, steeply rising passages and painted in dense, colorful floral and geometric patterns. It sits at the southern end of Red Square, making it impossible to miss and equally impossible to photograph fully from close up.
Take the Aeroexpress train from Sheremetyevo Airport to Belorussky Railway Station, then take the metro to Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, or Ploshchad Revolyutsii station, all a short walk from the cathedral.

Bolshoi Theatre
The Bolshoi Theatre, whose name simply means 'big' in Russian, has been home to Russia's leading ballet and opera companies since the building's current neoclassical form was completed in 1825 after an earlier structure burned down. Its eight-columned portico, topped by a bronze quadriga sculpture of Apollo's chariot, is one of Moscow's most photographed facades, and the gilded, red-and-gold interior of the main Historic Stage is considered one of the most beautiful theater spaces in the world following a major renovation completed in 2011. The Bolshoi Ballet remains one of the most prestigious dance companies globally, and tickets for popular productions can sell out well in advance. Guided daytime tours are available for visitors who want to see the interior without attending an evening performance.

GUM Department Store
GUM has stood along the eastern edge of Red Square since 1893, its glass-roofed arcades and ornate cast-iron bridges making it as much an architectural landmark as a shopping destination. Built originally as the Upper Trading Rows housing over a thousand individual shops, it was nationalized after the Russian Revolution and later became the Soviet Union's flagship state department store, though today it houses international luxury brands alongside a handful of nostalgic Soviet-era touches, including Stolovaya No. 57, a canteen styled after a 1950s Soviet dining hall. The central fountain beneath the glass roof is a popular meeting point, and the building is especially striking in December, when it's elaborately decorated with lights for the New Year holiday. Even for visitors uninterested in shopping, walking through simply to see the architecture is worthwhile.
Take the Aeroexpress train from Sheremetyevo Airport to Belorussky Railway Station, then take the metro to Ploshchad Revolyutsii or Okhotny Ryad station, both a short walk from GUM on Red Square.

State Tretyakov Gallery
The State Tretyakov Gallery holds the world's most comprehensive collection of Russian fine art, built from the private collection of 19th-century merchant Pavel Tretyakov, who donated his holdings to the city of Moscow in 1892. Its collection spans medieval Russian icons, including Andrei Rublev's celebrated Trinity icon, through to Russian Realist paintings and works by artists like Ilya Repin and Ivan Shishkin. The main building itself, with its distinctive fairy-tale-style red and white facade designed by artist Viktor Vasnetsov, sits in the historic Zamoskvorechye district south of the Kremlin, a quieter, more residential part of central Moscow than the areas around Red Square. A separate modern-art branch of the gallery, covering 20th-century and contemporary Russian art, is located elsewhere in the city for visitors wanting to see more recent work.
Take the Aeroexpress train from Sheremetyevo Airport to Belorussky Railway Station, then take the metro, transferring as needed, to Tretyakovskaya station, a short walk from the gallery.
