Top Places to Visit in Lima
Plaza Mayor (Historic Center)
Plaza Mayor, also called Plaza de Armas, has been the ceremonial and administrative heart of Lima since the city's founding by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535, and the surrounding Historic Center remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its concentration of colonial architecture. The Government Palace, official residence of Peru's president, occupies one side of the square, with a changing-of-the-guard ceremony held most days, while the Lima Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace, both featuring elaborately carved wooden balconies typical of colonial Lima, line the other sides. Streets radiating from the square retain their original Spanish grid layout, lined with mansions built in a blend of Spanish, French and indigenous-influenced styles collectively described as Lima's own take on colonial Baroque. Given Lima's location on a major fault line, several of the square's buildings have been rebuilt more than once following historic earthquakes.
From Jorge Chavez International Airport, take the Airport Express bus toward Miraflores, then a taxi or ride-hailing app (Uber, Cabify) to the historic center, or take a taxi directly from the airport, roughly 45-60 minutes depending on traffic.
Lima doesn't have a central passenger rail hub in the traditional sense; from wherever you're arriving, a taxi or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach the historic center.
From Lima's long-distance bus terminals, a taxi or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach the historic center.
Larco Museum
The Larco Museum, in an 18th-century vice-royal mansion built atop a pre-Columbian pyramid in the Pueblo Libre district, holds one of the most significant private collections of pre-Columbian Peruvian art anywhere, spanning more than 3,000 years and 45,000 pieces. Its ceramics collection is particularly notable, including an entire dedicated gallery of pre-Hispanic erotic pottery, a frank and historically important collection rarely displayed elsewhere. Beyond the ceramics, gold and silver work, textiles and funerary artifacts trace the succession of pre-Inca cultures, including the Moche and Nazca, that preceded the better-known Inca Empire. The museum's landscaped gardens and on-site restaurant, set among colonial architecture and pre-Columbian ruins in the same grounds, make it an easy place to spend a relaxed few hours beyond the galleries themselves.
From Jorge Chavez International Airport, a taxi or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach the museum in Pueblo Libre, roughly 30-45 minutes depending on traffic.

Miraflores
Miraflores is Lima's most visitor-friendly district, a clifftop neighborhood overlooking the Pacific Ocean known for its parks, restaurants and relative safety compared to some other parts of the city. The Malecon, a roughly 10-kilometer path running along the clifftops, connects a string of parks including Parque del Amor, decorated with mosaic tiles and a large sculpture of an embracing couple, offering some of the best ocean views in the city, particularly at sunset. Larcomar, a shopping and entertainment complex built directly into the cliff face below street level, adds a dramatic architectural element to the coastline, while Parque Kennedy, a few blocks inland, is known locally for its resident population of stray cats cared for by the community. Most visitors to Lima base themselves in Miraflores given its concentration of hotels and restaurants relative to the historic but less tourist-oriented downtown core.
The Airport Express bus runs directly from Jorge Chavez International Airport to Miraflores; alternatively, local bus route 18 covers the same route in roughly 70 minutes, or a taxi/ride-hailing app for a faster, pricier option.

Huaca Pucllana
Huaca Pucllana is a pre-Inca adobe and clay pyramid sitting incongruously in the middle of modern Miraflores, built by the Lima culture roughly 1,500 years ago as a ceremonial and administrative center predating the Inca Empire by nearly a thousand years. Constructed using a distinctive technique of small adobe bricks arranged like a bookshelf to allow better seismic flexibility, the structure has survived numerous earthquakes over the centuries better than some far more recent buildings in the city. Guided tours, generally required for entry, explain the site's ceremonial function and the human and animal sacrifices archaeologists believe were conducted here, along with ongoing excavation work still uncovering new sections of the complex. An on-site restaurant offers views over the illuminated ruins at night, a popular dinner spot that pairs Peruvian cuisine with the site's ancient backdrop.
From Jorge Chavez International Airport, a taxi or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach the site in Miraflores, roughly 45-60 minutes depending on traffic.

Barranco
Barranco, once a separate seaside resort town for Lima's elite before being absorbed into the wider city, has become Lima's bohemian, artistic district, known for colorful buildings, street art and a concentration of galleries, bars and some of the city's most acclaimed restaurants. The Bridge of Sighs, a wooden pedestrian bridge crossing a small ravine, is tied to local romantic legend and remains one of the district's most photographed spots, particularly at sunset when it frames views toward the ocean. Bajada de Banos, a steep path once used to reach the beach below, is lined with murals and cafes and connects the upper neighborhood to a lookout point over the Pacific. The district's laid-back, artsy character, combined with its strong dining and nightlife scene, makes it a popular alternative or complement to a Miraflores-based stay.
From Jorge Chavez International Airport, a taxi or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach Barranco, roughly 45-60 minutes depending on traffic.
