Top Places to Visit in Abidjan
St. Paul's Cathedral
St. Paul's Cathedral, designed by Italian architect Aldo Spirito and completed in 1985, is Abidjan's most visually striking modern landmark, its bold, asymmetrical concrete form rising from a hilltop in the Plateau district overlooking the Cocody lagoon. The cathedral's unconventional three-part bell tower, resembling a hooded figure with arms outstretched, was reportedly a deliberate architectural gesture rather than a purely decorative choice, and its interior is filled with rich stained glass comparable in warmth and color to the more famous basilica in Yamoussoukro. Climbing the roughly 230 steps to the bell tower rewards visitors with sweeping views over the Plateau district and the lagoon below, one of the best vantage points in the city. As an active church, modest dress is expected, and visiting on a quiet weekday morning generally allows for a calmer, less crowded experience of both the architecture and the view.
From Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to the Plateau district, roughly 20-30 minutes depending on traffic, as Abidjan has no metro or urban rail system.
Abidjan has no intercity passenger rail service; a taxi or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach the cathedral from anywhere in the city.
From Abidjan's long-distance bus and coach stations (gares routières), a taxi, shared taxi (wôrô-wôrô), or SOTRA bus is the standard way to reach the Plateau district and the cathedral.
Banco National Park
Banco National Park is a rare pocket of primary rainforest sitting almost entirely within Abidjan's city limits, one of very few such urban primary forests anywhere in the world, having survived the surrounding city's growth largely intact. Hiking trails of varying length wind through dense tropical canopy, past a small lake and waterfall, offering chances to spot monkeys, diverse birdlife and butterflies without leaving the metropolitan area. The park has also long served a practical function for the city, historically used by traditional washermen (laveurs) who still work along some of its streams, adding a lived-in, working layer to what's otherwise a protected natural reserve. Hiring a park guide is generally recommended both for navigating the trail network and for getting more context on the forest's ecology and the washermen's traditional work, and it makes for a genuinely refreshing contrast to Abidjan's dense urban core.
From Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to Banco National Park, roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic, as Abidjan has no metro or urban rail system.

From Abidjan's long-distance bus and coach stations (gares routières), a taxi or shared taxi (wôrô-wôrô) is the standard way to reach the park, on the city's western edge.
Musée des Civilisations de Côte d'Ivoire
The Musée des Civilisations de Côte d'Ivoire, in the Plateau district, holds the country's most significant collection of traditional Ivorian art and material culture, including masks, statues, textiles and ceremonial objects representing the more than 60 ethnic groups that make up modern Côte d'Ivoire. Exhibits cover the artistic and cultural traditions of groups including the Baoulé, Senufo and Dan peoples, whose mask-making and wood-carving traditions are internationally recognized within the broader canon of West African art. The museum provides valuable context for visitors interested in the country's cultural diversity beyond Abidjan's modern, cosmopolitan surface, tracing artistic and spiritual practices that continue in various forms in the country's rural regions today. Its relatively compact size makes it possible to see thoroughly in an hour or two, making it an easy addition to a Plateau-district itinerary alongside St. Paul's Cathedral.

The Plateau District
The Plateau district is Abidjan's central business and government quarter, a compact peninsula of modern high-rises, colonial-era administrative buildings and broad, tree-lined boulevards that earned it the affectionate nickname the Paris of West Africa among older residents. Boulevard de la République, cutting through the district's core, gives the clearest on-foot overview of the area's mixed architectural history, anchored by the Palais de Justice and lined with government ministries, banks and the country's most significant office towers. La Pyramide, an eccentric pyramid-shaped office building from the 1970s, stands out as one of the district's more architecturally unusual landmarks amid the more conventional high-rises. Surrounded almost entirely by the Ébrié Lagoon, the Plateau offers waterfront views at several points along its edge, and pirogue (traditional canoe) rides from the district's edges give a different, slower-paced way to see the district's skyline from the water.
From Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to the Plateau district, roughly 20-30 minutes depending on traffic, as Abidjan has no metro or urban rail system.

Treichville Market
Treichville, one of Abidjan's oldest and most densely populated districts, centers on a large, bustling market that offers one of the most vivid, unfiltered introductions to everyday Ivorian commerce and street life in the city. Stalls sell everything from fresh produce, fish and spices to fabric, household goods and traditional crafts, packed into a dense grid of covered and open-air sections that stay busy from early morning well into the evening. The surrounding neighborhood is known for its lively nightlife and maquis, informal open-air restaurants serving grilled fish, attiéké and other Ivorian specialties, making it a popular destination after dark as well as during the day. It offers a deliberately different character from the more formal, business-oriented Plateau district just across the lagoon, and is best visited with a degree of standard city awareness around belongings, particularly in the busiest, most crowded sections of the market.
From Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport, take a taxi or ride-hailing app to Treichville, roughly 20-30 minutes depending on traffic, as Abidjan has no metro or urban rail system.
Abidjan has no intercity passenger rail service; a taxi or ride-hailing app is the standard way to reach Treichville from anywhere in the city.
From Abidjan's long-distance bus and coach stations (gares routières), a taxi, shared taxi (wôrô-wôrô), or SOTRA bus is the standard way to reach Treichville.
