Top Places to Visit in Jakarta
National Monument (Monas)
The National Monument, universally known as Monas, is a 132-meter marble obelisk in Merdeka Square topped with a flame plated in 35 kilograms of gold leaf, built in the 1960s and 70s to commemorate Indonesia's struggle for independence from Dutch colonial rule. An elevator carries visitors up to an observation deck near the top, offering a 360-degree view over central Jakarta, though on hazy days the view can be limited. The monument's base houses the National History Museum, with 51 dioramas tracing Indonesian history from prehistoric times through independence, and beneath that sits the Hall of Independence, home to a symbolic golden map of the Indonesian archipelago and a room displaying the original independence proclamation. Merdeka Square itself, one of the largest city squares in the world, surrounds the monument and is a popular gathering spot for locals, especially in the early morning and at weekends.
From Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, take the Airport Rail Link to BNI City (Sudirman Baru) station, transfer to the KRL commuter line or a short taxi ride toward Merdeka Square and Monas.
From Gambir Station, Monas is a short walk away, on the northern edge of Merdeka Square.
From Jakarta's long-distance bus terminals (such as Kampung Rambutan or Pulo Gebang), take TransJakarta or a taxi toward Merdeka Square and Monas.
Istiqlal Mosque
Istiqlal Mosque, completed in 1978 after 17 years of construction, is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and can accommodate more than 120,000 worshippers across its multiple prayer levels, built to commemorate Indonesia's independence, with 'Istiqlal' meaning independence in Arabic. Its modernist design, by a Christian Indonesian architect selected through a national competition, favors clean concrete lines and a large central dome over the more ornate style of many older mosques, reflecting a deliberately unifying, non-sectarian architectural statement. Directly across the road stands Jakarta Cathedral, a neo-Gothic Catholic church, and the two buildings facing one another have become an enduring symbol of Indonesia's religious pluralism, reinforced in 2020 by the completion of an underground Tunnel of Friendship physically connecting the two. Modest dress is required, and free robes are typically available at the entrance for visitors who need them.
From Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, take the Airport Rail Link to BNI City station, transfer to the KRL commuter line, and ride to Juanda Station, a short walk from the mosque.
From Gambir Station, take the KRL commuter line one stop to Juanda Station, right by the mosque.
From Jakarta's long-distance bus terminals, take TransJakarta or a taxi toward the mosque, near Merdeka Square.
Kota Tua (Old Town)
Kota Tua, Jakarta's Old Town, preserves the core of what was once Batavia, the fortified capital the Dutch East India Company built here in the 17th century, and remains one of the best-preserved collections of Dutch colonial architecture in Southeast Asia. Fatahillah Square anchors the district, surrounded by restored colonial buildings including the Jakarta History Museum, housed in the old Batavia town hall, and the Wayang Museum, dedicated to Indonesia's traditional puppet theater. Street performers, bicycle rentals in colorful vintage-style outfits, and café Batavia, a long-running colonial-era cafe, add to the square's lively, photogenic atmosphere, especially on weekends. Nearby, Sunda Kelapa, Jakarta's original harbor, still functions as a working port for traditional wooden pinisi schooners, offering a working, less curated counterpoint to the restored square just a short distance away.
From Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, take the Airport Rail Link to BNI City station, transfer to the KRL commuter line, and ride to Jakarta Kota station, right at the edge of Kota Tua.
From Gambir Station, take the KRL commuter line to Jakarta Kota station, at the edge of Kota Tua.
From Jakarta's long-distance bus terminals, take TransJakarta toward the Kota corridor, or a taxi, to reach Kota Tua.
Ancol Dreamland
Ancol Dreamland, officially Taman Impian Jaya Ancol, is Jakarta's largest recreational complex, spread along the city's northern waterfront and combining a beach, an amusement park called Dunia Fantasi, a water park, an aquarium (Sea World), and a marina from which boats depart for the Thousand Islands further out in Jakarta Bay. Dunia Fantasi's rides and themed zones make it the closest thing Jakarta has to a full-scale theme park, drawing large crowds especially on weekends and Indonesian public holidays. The beach area, while not the clearest water given the bay's urban setting, remains a popular, affordable spot for locals to relax by the sea, and the complex as a whole functions as much as a general leisure destination for Jakartans as a tourist attraction. Given its scale, most visitors plan on spending the better part of a day here if visiting more than one section.
From Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, take the Airport Rail Link to BNI City station, then a taxi or ride-hailing app (Grab, Gojek) toward Ancol in North Jakarta, or take a TransJakarta bus connection.
From Gambir Station, take TransJakarta or a taxi toward Ancol in North Jakarta.
From Jakarta's long-distance bus terminals, TransJakarta buses connect toward Ancol; alternatively, take a taxi or ride-hailing app.
National Museum of Indonesia
The National Museum of Indonesia, on the western side of Merdeka Square, holds the country's most comprehensive collection of archaeological, ethnographic and historical artifacts, spanning prehistoric fossils, Hindu-Buddhist stone sculpture from Java's temple era, and traditional textiles and crafts representing Indonesia's enormous ethnic diversity. Often called the Elephant Museum locally, after a bronze elephant statue given by the King of Thailand that stands in its forecourt, the museum's original building dates to the Dutch colonial period, with a modern extension added in the 2000s to house additional galleries. Its ceramics collection, drawn partly from historic Chinese and Southeast Asian trade with the archipelago, and its collection of prehistoric human fossils, including Java Man-related specimens, are particular highlights for visitors interested in the deeper history behind Indonesia's more recent colonial and independence-era story told at nearby Kota Tua and Monas.
From Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, take the Airport Rail Link to BNI City station, transfer to the KRL commuter line, and continue toward Gondangdia station, then a short taxi to the museum on Merdeka Square.
From Gambir Station, the museum is a short walk or taxi ride away on the western side of Merdeka Square.
From Jakarta's long-distance bus terminals, take TransJakarta toward the Monas/Merdeka Square corridor, or a taxi, to reach the museum.
