Top Places to Visit in São Paulo
Avenida Paulista & MASP
Avenida Paulista is São Paulo's best-known avenue, a 1.9-mile stretch of skyscrapers, banks and cultural institutions that has anchored the city's business and civic life since the early 1900s. Its most photographed landmark is MASP, the São Paulo Museum of Art, whose red concrete-and-glass structure appears to float above an open public square on giant supporting pillars, itself a piece of modernist architecture as significant as the collection inside, which spans European masters to Brazilian modernists. On Sundays the avenue closes to car traffic, filling instead with cyclists, skaters, street performers and market stalls that turn the whole strip into an impromptu public park. It's also the traditional gathering point for the city's massive New Year's Eve and Pride celebrations.
Take the Airport Express bus from Guarulhos International Airport to Luz station, then transfer to the metro and ride toward Trianon-MASP or Consolação station, directly on the avenue.
From Luz station, take the metro (transferring as needed) to Line 2 (Green) and get off at Trianon-MASP station, right outside the museum.
From Tietê Bus Terminal, take Metro Line 1 (Blue), transfer to Line 2 (Green), and ride to Trianon-MASP station.
Ibirapuera Park
Ibirapuera Park is São Paulo's largest and most popular urban park, a sprawling green space of lakes, jogging paths and modernist buildings designed in part by Oscar Niemeyer, including the curved Bienal Pavilion that hosts the city's major art biennial. On weekends it fills with joggers, cyclists, families picnicking and street vendors, giving a good sense of everyday Paulistano life away from the business districts. Several museums sit within the park grounds, including the Museum of Modern Art and an Ibirapuera planetarium, so it works as a half-day or full-day outing depending on how many of the buildings you want to see alongside the outdoor space. Bike rental stands near the entrances make it easy to cover the park's considerable size.
Take the Airport Express bus from Guarulhos to Luz station, then take the metro toward Paraíso station, the closest stop, followed by a roughly 30-minute walk or a short taxi to the park entrance.
From Luz station, take the metro to Paraíso station, then walk about 30 minutes or take a short taxi to the park.
From Tietê Bus Terminal, take Metro Line 1 (Blue) toward the Line 1/2 interchange, continue to Paraíso station, then walk or taxi to the park.
Sé Cathedral
The Metropolitan Cathedral of São Paulo, generally called Sé Cathedral, is a neo-Gothic church completed in the 1950s after more than four decades of construction, its twin spires rising above the historic city center. Its crypt holds the tomb of Tibiriçá, a 16th-century indigenous chief who allied with the Portuguese and is considered a founding figure of the city, an unusual detail for a Catholic cathedral. The surrounding Praça da Sé is one of São Paulo's most historically significant public squares, long a site of political rallies and protests as well as everyday city life, and remains the symbolic center from which all distances in the city are traditionally measured. It sits directly above one of the metro network's busiest interchange stations.
Take the Airport Express bus from Guarulhos to Luz station, then a short ride on Metro Line 1 (Blue) to Sé station, right beneath the cathedral.
From Luz station, take Metro Line 1 (Blue) directly to Sé station.
From Tietê Bus Terminal, take Metro Line 1 (Blue) directly to Sé station.
Mercado Municipal
The Mercado Municipal, generally known as Mercadão, is São Paulo's grand early-20th-century food market, its stained-glass windows and vaulted iron-and-glass roof housing stalls selling fruit, spices, cheeses and cured meats from across Brazil. It's best known for two specific dishes invented within its own stalls: the mortadella sandwich, piled absurdly high with thin-sliced meat, and pastel de bacalhau, a fried codfish pastry, both sold at stand-up counters that get busy around lunchtime. Beyond the food, the market's Art Nouveau stained-glass panels depicting agricultural scenes are worth looking up for while wandering the aisles. It gets crowded on weekends, so a weekday visit gives more room to browse the stalls without jostling for space.
Take the Airport Express bus from Guarulhos to Luz station, then a short ride on Metro Line 1 (Blue) to São Bento station, about a 10-minute walk from the market.
From Luz station, take Metro Line 1 (Blue) to São Bento station, then walk about 10 minutes to the market.
From Tietê Bus Terminal, take Metro Line 1 (Blue) to São Bento station, then walk to the market.
Theatro Municipal
Theatro Municipal opened in 1911 as São Paulo's grand opera house, modeled loosely on the Paris Opera and built during the coffee-boom era when the city's elite wanted a cultural showpiece to match its growing wealth. Maria Callas, Nijinsky and Arthur Rubinstein all performed on its stage over the following decades, and it remains home to the city's symphony orchestra, ballet and opera companies today. Its ornate interior, with gilded balconies and elaborate ceiling painting, is worth seeing even without attending a performance, and guided tours run on select days for visitors who want to see the building without buying a show ticket. It sits at the edge of the historic Vale do Anhangabaú, an easy walk from Praça da República.
Take the Airport Express bus from Guarulhos to Luz station, then take Metro Line 1 (Blue) a short distance to Anhangabaú station, right by the theatre.
From Luz station, take Metro Line 1 (Blue) to Anhangabaú station.
From Tietê Bus Terminal, take Metro Line 1 (Blue) directly to Anhangabaú station.
