Top Places to Visit in Dhaka

Lalbagh Fort

Lalbagh Fort, also known as Fort Aurangabad, was begun in 1678 by Prince Muhammad Azam, son of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, but was never completed after the death of Pari Bibi, daughter of the fort's second builder, Shaista Khan, was taken as such a bad omen that construction halted permanently. What survives includes Pari Bibi's marble-and-black-basalt tomb, the Diwan-i-Aam audience hall, which now houses a small museum of Mughal-era weapons, coins and calligraphy, and a three-domed mosque still in occasional use. The fort's well-tended gardens offer a quiet contrast to the density of Old Dhaka just outside its walls, and the site is particularly atmospheric in the soft light of early morning before crowds arrive. Despite being unfinished by design, it remains one of the most complete surviving examples of Mughal architecture in Bangladesh.

Ahsan Manzil

Ahsan Manzil, known as the Pink Palace for its rose-colored facade, was built in the 1870s on the banks of the Buriganga River as the residence of the Nawabs of Dhaka, the city's leading aristocratic family under British colonial rule. Its Indo-Saracenic architecture blends South Asian, Gothic and Mughal design elements beneath a large central dome, and the building holds the distinction of introducing electricity to Dhaka in 1901. Now a museum, its 23 galleries across 31 rooms display period furniture, portraits, weapons and household items that recreate the opulence of Nawabi-era Dhaka. The riverside setting, with boats still working the Buriganga much as they did a century ago, adds real historical texture to a visit here beyond the palace itself.

National Parliament House

The National Parliament House, known locally as Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban, was designed by renowned American architect Louis Kahn and completed in 1982, eight years after his death, following a design process that took over two decades from initial commission to completion. Its massive geometric concrete forms, pierced by triangular, circular and rectangular openings that flood the interior with natural light, are considered one of the most significant works of modern architecture in South Asia. The complex sits within extensive grounds bordered by an artificial lake, giving the building a striking, almost fortress-like presence when viewed from across the water. The interior, including the main assembly chamber, is generally not open to casual visitors without prior arrangement, but the exterior and surrounding plaza are freely accessible and are the main draw for most who come to see it.

MRT Line 6 doesn't yet run directly from the airport; take a taxi or ride-hailing app toward Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, roughly 30-45 minutes depending on traffic, or a taxi to Agargaon metro station to continue by rail.

Star Mosque

Star Mosque, or Tara Masjid, is a small but visually striking early-19th-century mosque in Old Dhaka, named for the star motifs made of Chinese and Japanese porcelain chips and mosaic tiles that cover its exterior walls and domes. Originally built in a simpler form, it was significantly expanded and decorated in the early 20th century by a wealthy local patron, giving it the elaborate blue-and-white star-studded appearance it's known for today. It remains an active neighborhood mosque, so visitors should dress modestly and time visits around prayer hours. Its small scale and residential setting, tucked into the narrow lanes of Old Dhaka, make it a quick but memorable stop, often combined with Lalbagh Fort and Ahsan Manzil on the same outing.

Dhakeshwari Temple

Dhakeshwari Temple is the most important Hindu temple in Bangladesh and is believed to have given Dhaka its name, though the exact origins of both the temple and the city's etymology are debated among historians. Dating in some form to the 12th century, with major reconstruction over the centuries, the temple is dedicated to Dhakeshwari, a form of the goddess Durga, and its main sanctum houses her idol alongside shrines to other deities within the temple's walled, multi-structure compound. It functions as the country's national temple for Bangladesh's Hindu minority and draws large crowds during Durga Puja each autumn, when the surrounding streets fill with processions and festivities. Outside festival periods, it offers a calmer, contemplative visit with visible Mughal-era architectural influence in its layout and detailing.
