Top Places to Visit in Melbourne

Federation Square

Federation Square, opened in 2002 to mark the centenary of Australian federation, is Melbourne's primary civic gathering space, its deliberately unconventional fractal-patterned facades standing in sharp contrast to the more traditional Victorian-era architecture surrounding it. The square houses the Ian Potter Centre, dedicated to Australian art within the National Gallery of Victoria's collection, and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, covering film, television and digital culture through interactive exhibits. Its open plaza hosts year-round public events, from free outdoor film screenings and festivals to major sporting broadcasts on a large public screen, making it as much a functioning civic space as a tourist attraction. Sitting directly opposite Flinders Street Station, one of Melbourne's most recognizable buildings in its own right, the square serves as a natural starting point for exploring the surrounding CBD on foot.

Queen Victoria Market

Queen Victoria Market, operating on this site since 1878, is one of the largest open-air markets in the Southern Hemisphere and remains one of Melbourne's most-visited attractions, its stalls spread across several large sheds selling fresh produce, meat, seafood, deli goods and a separate section of clothing and general merchandise. Some of the market's original 19th-century Victorian-era shed structures still stand, giving parts of the market a distinct heritage character alongside its everyday function as a working food market for the city. The Night Market, running on Wednesday evenings during the warmer months, adds a food-truck and live-music dimension to the site, drawing a different, more social crowd than the daytime shopping trade. It sits at the northwestern edge of the CBD, an easy walk or short tram ride from Federation Square and the rest of central Melbourne.

Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria

The Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, established in 1846 and spanning 38 hectares just south of the Yarra River, are widely regarded as among the finest botanical gardens in the world, their landscaped lawns, ornamental lake and more than 8,500 plant species drawn from across Australia and the globe. The gardens' design deliberately incorporates sweeping sightlines and curated views, a legacy of their 19th-century landscape design principles, and the Ian Potter Foundation Children's Garden offers dedicated interactive spaces for younger visitors. Guided walks focusing on Indigenous plant use and Aboriginal culture, run in partnership with local Traditional Owner groups, add a layer of cultural context often missing from more purely ornamental botanical gardens elsewhere. Early morning visits are particularly popular for the reflection of the city skyline across the Ornamental Lake, before the gardens fill with the joggers, picnickers and tourists that make it one of inner Melbourne's most-used green spaces.

Eureka Skydeck

Eureka Skydeck, on the 88th floor of the Eureka Tower in Southbank, is the Southern Hemisphere's highest public observation deck, its floor-to-ceiling windows offering 360-degree views over Melbourne, Port Phillip Bay and, on clear days, as far as the Dandenong Ranges to the east. The Edge, a glass cube that mechanically extends beyond the building's facade over the street 285 meters below, is the deck's signature thrill feature, with the glass turning briefly opaque before clearing to reveal the sheer drop underneath. Completed in 2006, the tower's gold-tinted glass crown, visible from much of the city, is said to reference the Eureka Stockade, an 1854 gold miners' rebellion the building is named for. Sunset is a particularly popular time to visit, when the deck offers views of the city transitioning from daylight to its illuminated night skyline.

Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)

The Melbourne Cricket Ground, known universally as the MCG, opened in 1853 and remains Australia's largest and most significant sporting venue, having hosted the first-ever Test cricket match in 1877 and the main stadium events of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. With a capacity exceeding 100,000, it's the largest stadium in the Southern Hemisphere and serves as the home ground for Australian Rules Football's biggest annual event, the AFL Grand Final, alongside international cricket test matches during the Australian summer. The National Sports Museum, housed within the stadium, covers the broader history of Australian sport beyond just events held at the MCG itself, including cricket, Australian football, the Olympics and more. Guided stadium tours run on non-event days, taking visitors through areas including the players' changing rooms and out onto the hallowed turf itself, a detail of particular significance to sport-obsessed Melburnians.
