What BRT and PT Actually Are
BRT — Brasília Time
São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Salvador. Standing at UTC-3:00 as written, and the region does not change its clocks, so that offset holds all year. Brazil abolished daylight saving in 2019, so this offset no longer shifts in the southern summer.
Brazil ran daylight saving for decades before abolishing it in 2019, on the argument that changed electricity consumption patterns had erased the savings.
PT — Pacific Time
Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Las Vegas, Vancouver. Standing at UTC-8:00 as written, and the region does change its clocks, so its live offset moves by an hour twice a year. The next change is on Sunday, November 1, 2026, to PST.
Pacific Time anchors the US technology industry, so a great deal of software and scheduling convention is written implicitly around it.
What This Means in Practice
This gap is not fixed
PT changes its clocks and BRT does not, so the difference between them moves by an hour twice a year. A recurring meeting set now will drift for one side from Sunday, November 1, 2026 unless someone resets it.
