Sixty-five Tennessee counties are on Central Time and thirty are on Eastern. The line follows the Cumberland Plateau - and Knoxville put itself there in 1946.

Tennessee's Time Zone Split: Why Nashville and Knoxville Are an Hour Apart

Drive I-40 east out of Nashville and somewhere around mile marker 340, about 45 miles short of Knoxville, your phone jumps forward an hour. You haven't left Tennessee. You've come off the Cumberland Plateau.

Tennessee is one of fourteen states split across two time zones, and its smaller zone carries a far bigger share of the state than most.

Sixty-five counties Central, thirty Eastern

Of Tennessee's 95 counties, 65 are on Central Time and 30 are on Eastern. Central covers roughly three-quarters of the land area and about two-thirds of the population.

The thirty Eastern counties are the East Tennessee grand division minus three — Bledsoe, Cumberland and Marion, which sit on the plateau and stayed Central. So "East Tennessee" and "Eastern Time" are close to the same thing, but not quite.

The line follows the plateau, not a river or a county grid

The boundary is written into federal regulation at 49 CFR 71.5(d), which describes it from the Eastern side: south along the west line of Scott County, around the north and west lines of Morgan, along the north line of Roane to Rhea County, then southwest along the west lines of Rhea and Hamilton to the Georgia border. Read from the Central side, that puts the line along the eastern edges of Pickett, Fentress, Cumberland, Bledsoe, Sequatchie and Marion.

On the ground it hugs the eastern escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau — the 500 to 1,000 foot drop where the flat plateau falls away into the Tennessee Valley. The plateau side is Central. The valley below is Eastern.

Two crossings people actually notice:

  • I-40, between mile markers 340 and 341, at the Cumberland/Roane county line
  • I-24, heading west out of Chattanooga, at the Hamilton/Marion county line

The I-24 one catches out Chattanooga commuters daily: Jasper and South Pittsburg are half an hour down the interstate and an hour behind on the clock.

Knoxville put itself on Eastern Time in 1946

None of this was federal design. When the railroads standardised American time in November 1883, they put all of Tennessee in the Central zone — the state's rail traffic ran toward Chicago, St. Louis and Louisville, so Central made sense. It stayed that way for sixty years.

What changed was that East Tennessee's business had stopped pointing west. After the Second World War, Knoxville's Senior and Junior Chambers of Commerce argued that the region's commerce ran toward Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia — all on Eastern Time — and that being an hour behind them was costing money.

They didn't wait for Washington. Once the state Supreme Court cleared the way, Knoxville mayor Cas Walker simply proclaimed the city on Eastern Standard Time at midnight on April 27, 1946. Oak Ridge followed voluntarily. Maryville voted to join in August 1947. By the end of the decade more than thirty East Tennessee towns had done the same.

The Interstate Commerce Commission, which then had authority over zone boundaries, caught up in 1949 — formally moving the line and bringing Chattanooga and the rest of East Tennessee into the Eastern zone. The cities had changed their clocks first and the map followed.

The boundary has been stable ever since. Authority passed from the ICC to the Department of Transportation under the Department of Transportation Act of 1966, and no Tennessee county has been relocated since. That's unusual — neighbouring Indiana moved eight counties in 2006 alone, and Kentucky moved Wayne County in 2000.

What it means day to day

Both zones observe Daylight Saving Time on the same schedule, so the gap is a steady one hour all year. Only the UTC offset changes with the season: Central is UTC−6 in winter and −5 in summer, Eastern is −5 and −4.

Practical consequences:

  • A 9am meeting in Nashville is 10am in Knoxville. "Tennessee time" is not a thing.
  • State law even writes the split into election rules: polls close at 8pm in Eastern counties and 7pm in Central ones — the same instant, deliberately.
  • Crossville, Jasper and Dunlap sit on or beside the plateau and keep Nashville's clock, however far east they feel. Check the county, not the vibe.

It's the same pattern behind almost every US time zone line: the boundary follows where people do business, not where a mapmaker would have drawn it. East Tennessee looked east, so it moved east.

When you're scheduling with someone in Tennessee, use the city rather than the state — the time zone converter resolves it properly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nashville on Central or Eastern Time?

Central. So are Memphis, Clarksville, Murfreesboro and Jackson, along with 65 of Tennessee's 95 counties. Knoxville, Chattanooga and Johnson City are on Eastern Time, an hour ahead, together with the other 29 counties of East Tennessee.

Where is the time zone line in Tennessee?

It follows the eastern escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau, tracing the eastern county lines of Pickett, Fentress, Cumberland, Bledsoe, Sequatchie and Marion. On I-40 you cross it between mile markers 340 and 341, about 45 miles west of Knoxville. On I-24 it's at the Hamilton/Marion line west of Chattanooga.

Why is East Tennessee on Eastern Time?

Because it asked to be. The railroads put all of Tennessee on Central in 1883, but after the Second World War Knoxville business groups argued the region traded with Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia rather than Nashville. Knoxville switched itself on April 27, 1946, other towns followed, and the ICC formalised the boundary in 1949.

Do both parts of Tennessee change clocks at the same time?

Yes. Both zones observe Daylight Saving Time on the identical national schedule, so the one-hour gap between Nashville and Knoxville never changes. Only the UTC offset shifts with the season: Central runs UTC-6 in winter and UTC-5 in summer, Eastern runs UTC-5 and UTC-4.
